• Question about MP3's and WMA's...and stuff..

I have a CD that I ripped, but it saved it as a WMA file, which was cool by me, played on the computer, but I tried to send a song to my brother, and "no can play/open/hear the damn thing. So I guess I somehow have to convert it to an MP3, but I can't figure out how in Windows Media Player or Real Player. What am I doing wrong??
Thanks...jb

Don't know how to do it with those programs, but this one is the one my brother uses. All my CD's rip as WMA's also and he uses this to convert em. DL the trial version, it lets ya convert one at a time though.

I never had that problem with WMA files, had lots of files sent to me in that format and was able to play them all... strange

IMPORTANT!!!

Before you rip to WMA, you MUST go to Tools->Options->Rip Music and turn OFF "Copy protect music".

That is the stupidest default option that can be turned on in the history of software. There is NO reason to have that turned on. You bought the CD, you're a legit licensor. Why the fukk would you want to throw up obstacles in how YOU play YOUR OWN music?

Also, if that option is turned on and you have to rebuild your computer, kiss your WMA files goodbye unless you had the presence of mind to have backed up the WMA license keys to your own music.

That said, I rip my CDs to WMA Lossless. If I lose a CD, I can completely recover it perfectly.

I use a separate program (similar to powerconverter) to transcode the lossless WMAs down to MP3s that I can download onto my iPod.

Thanks for the info SeventhSon, the CD I ripped was one of our band's practice. I just wanted to give my brother an idea of the type of music we play, but he couldn't play it.

You buy a CD, not the rights to the contents of that CD. That's why there is Copy Protection.

You buy the rights to fair use of that music which include making a backup copy of it or transcoding it into any format for your personal listening pleasure on any device that you own (walkman, mp3 player, etc.). That's why that copy protection is optional and not mandatory. It's a token gesture to the recording industry by Microsoft.
