Re: Steroid hearings???

Wow, i'm surprised so many think that this is not an important issue...

These atheletes have taken a great game and reduced it to a shell of what it once was. There is no longer any integrity in sports. When I was a kid it was amazing if a guy hit 40 home runs.

Everyone involved looks the other way because of the money thats involved, like everything else in life corruption and money rule.

It's funny that the only guy yesterday that actually made sense was Jose Canseco, and he's the one who's looked at as the "bad guy". I understand he's doing this for personal gain, but for anyone to deny that there has been a problem in baseball the last 10-15 years has their head in the sand.

Shilling was spinning the entire day, and Sosa was sitting there pretending like he doesn't understand english (just like he didn't know his bat was corked).

And McGwire was the biggest joke of all, or was it the "five strikes and your out" oh so tough policy that baseball now has in place...

I agree with Ralph. This affects the entire pyramid of athletics in the U.S. Because our "role models" see fit to cheat and take performance enhancement drugs, this corrupt attitude filters down to the college level and to the high school level. Not only are there serious mental/physical health consequences (the parents of 2 kids who committed suicide were at the hearing), it corrupts the moral fabric of impressionable, young athletes. This country is better than that. It's all in the little things that make this country great.

Yes, and McGwire was a joke.

It's not a question of it not being an important issue, at least to some people. But it's not an issue that the federal government has any role in which to play. I, for one, favor getting rid of MLB's antitrust exemption--I'm no big fan of antitrust laws, in general (though they do have a role), but there is *no* reason why MLB deserves an exemption more than, say, Microsoft.

Baseball screwed itself over by allowing doping to continue unabated long after the other major sports leagues instituted strict testing regimes.

The baseball owners and players are the ones who will pay in terms of diminshed fan support. For a sport so dependent on its legacy and on the record books to look away from widespread doping is just amazing--but then baseball's ownership seems to be among the biggest bunch of well-heeled dopes out there.

I agree that it's important to have integrity in sports. But we have govenment officials conducting hearings regarding a game. I'd much rather see government officials tackle more pressing issues such as the war in Iraq, our budget defecit and economy, homelessness, and infrastructure.

This is this reason why I lost interest in sports years ago.
No integrity, no accountability, and way to much money for the players. When did or does a player need to be paid a million plus dollars to play a "game". It definitely got way out of hand a long time.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

"Anyone who tries to fling crap my way better have a really good crap flinger."

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

Yes, there's a bee in the pudding.

Well, heres my take.MLB is a company that employes baseball players.

Steriods are ILLEGAL with ramifications for use and distribution, like any other illegal substance.

MLB was not enforcing GOVERNMENT LAWS, and was basically allowing it to happen as long as everyone forgot about the strike season that nearly wiped the sport out of the mainframe. If MLB doesnt want its employees to follow the law, someone needs to.

i saw the results of a poll this morning about who's image was tainted the worst yesterday, the results were-

McGuire-55%
M.L.B.- 25%
Congress- 20%

i always crack up when i see "Drunk" Selig's face. i agree with solo, they have danced and skirted around the edges on this for too long, and now it's microscope time. i don't know where i stand, but i know that "jose can you seeco", is
a mumbling buffoon and is raising money more than anything else.
Not helping the situation since 1965!

Congress is wasting our time and money on this crap. This is not, in any way, shape or form, a federal issue.

This is a federal issue because of MLB's anti-trust laws exemptions.

I'm sure that the rest of Washington didn't shut down for this hearing, just like ESPN didn't shut down because of the hockey lockout.
All professional sports should use the Olympics as a model for their doping testing/punishments.
I find it funny that Pete Rose is banned for life for betting against his opposition, but these clowns will retain their stats and records.
Roger Maris still holds the single season HR record IMO.

Bingo. They never should have gotten the exemption, and they sure as sh!t have proven that it should be taken away.

WRT to Big Mac, I was listening to Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio last week & he made a great point: Get in front of this issue & fess up now & people will forgive & forget by the end of the news cycle. The media has ADD. Keep stonewalling & it will follow you to the grave.
