I know I keep re-hashing this thread, but it's a cool way to find new things to read...

OK, so from my last post I fibbed a little. Instead of the 2nd book of the latest Star Wars trilogy, I finally finished the book on Meyer Lansky and picked up "Splintered Icon"... The Lansky book was a long read partially because I haven't been reading as much on the way home (riding home with the wife you tend to talk more than read) or when I'm in the gym. (I'm not using the stationary bike anymore) I found Splintered Icon because of it's similarities to The DaVinci Code (more DC-like books coming soon) and other Dan Brown books. I have two more books that are in a similar vein, I think one is called "The Amber Room" but the other title escapes me...

"Letters from Earth is a good read. I won't claim to understand satanism but if part of it is recognizing human carnal desires without condemnation then there are some really funny passages in LFE along those lines. It's hard to go wrong with Twain."

Thanks man, since I posted that I have read LFE about three times now. It is TRULY an amazing read. YES it is EXCATLY the same genral principles and philophies of Satanism..

I was blown away that it was written that long ago and never acknowledged or protested by any of white light based faith groups..yes it is "fiction" BUT it does turn the bible upside down, and thumbs it's nose at the christian belief system, even if tongue in cheek..but in all fairness The Bible is just as fictitious...IMO.

I found the DaVinci Code a little mundane and long winded. I barely got through it. I think they could have made it a bit more concise to get the point across. DaVinci like Twain also poked fun at christianity..ironically he was hired by the church as an artist.."The Last Supper" the Christ is depicted with his wife...man that apostle sure had some nice cans. Like everything by Dan Brown. The Da Vinci Code was a great read. I'm about to start reading it again so I can compare notes with the movie, which better the fuck not be blocked from showing!

A&D was great as well. Digital Fortress was a good story, just a little outdated techwise when I read it. The whole cryptography thing is interesting to me.

I'm trying to read Valhalla Rising by Clive Cussler. I enjoyed the movie Sahara, so I thought I'd check out one of Clive's books. Absolute shit! It's not the worst book I've ever read, but geez, the guy waffles on with so much unnecessary bullshit. If he cut out his overuse of adjectives in an attempt to appear more like a 'real' novellist, he could whittle the book down to about 350 pages instead of 530 & still have a decent sort of a story.

And his meagre attempts at creating suspense and tension? At the 11th hour, our hero Dirk has just worked out how to save the day.

"Tell us how you plan to save the 617 souls on board the cruise liner, Dirk?"
"No. I'll wait until I'm about to slip into unconsciousness before I share that little titbit with you." [img]/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

Fortunately, (for the passengers, anyway) no unforeseen accident befell Dirk before he was finally able to relay his plan to offsider Al Giordino and all on board were resusciated with no serious side effects. Although I was kind of hoping Dirk, in his lightheaded, carbon-dioxide-effected state would turn too quickly and batter himself unconcious against a bulkhead. But that would've left Clive with 200 pages to fill with his franchise character dead.

well, at least I feel can comment with some experience about Clive's writing now. Maybe I'll go pick up the last Salman Rushdie book instead. Now that is a guy who can seriously write!

I picked up an awesome Sci-Fi/Fantasy trilogy by Long Island writer John Marco: The books are:

The Devils Armor
The Sword of Angels

I used to be a big reader, mostly Stephen King and various TSR books (Dragonlance being the fav) but lately not so much. Dragonlance has pretty much crashed and burned in my eyes since the best authors have kinda gone away. Richard Knaak, Mary Kirchoff, and of course Weis and Hickman were the best writers IMO. And I like most Stephen King but I was passionate about The Dark Tower. I loved that series. I am so glad he finished it before he died and although the end is somewhat of a beginning, it seemed..right somehow. I very much liked the last book even though I know of some people who hated it.

People keep telling me to check out the works of George R.R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire). I might do that in the coming months. Anyone else read those?

Right now I'm reading a lot of Terry Goodkind. I discovered his books a couple months ago because a friend mentioned that he's very much inspired by my favorite author Ayn Rand. So far it's pretty good stuff, I would recommend his work.

Violent, epic, fantacy with it's feet planted in reality, don't think it can be done?

OK, finished up the Star Wars bug trilogy and I even read the latest Timothy Zahn Star Wars book. Now I'm reading Motley Crue's "The Dirt".

Last week I read Dan Brown's "Deception Point" and Michael Crighton's "State Of Fear."

I preferred Crighton's novel. He is a very good writer and makes great use of the language. I like the way he can load you up with scientific data but make it very easy to understand and keep your attention.

Brown is pretty slick, as well, but I find he's a little too "Dean Koontz" for my tastes. His novels seem to carry the same tone and have very similar character developments and the endings are always.... [img]/images/graemlins/band.gif[/img] An unhappy ending never killed anyone.

Agreed on the DL writers. Have you read the War of Souls Trilogy? I actually ended up liking those books, it was tough to get into at first, but I warmed up to the story about 1/4 of the way through Dragons of a Fallen Sun. Although, I must admit, I hated the ending to Dragons of a Vanished Moon.

I'm starting DaVinci Code now.

I get into phases and read all I can of 1 author then tend to move on. I'm on a Pratchett kick now and am looking into Brian Keene.
