Re: Recreational reading or TËKKŸ\'s book club.

I don't read as much as I used to. I always liked Dean Koontz, Clive Barker and Steven King. Richard Harris' Hannibal series was good reading also.

and of course hemingway. "the sun also rises" is maybe the best piece of literature i have ever read. walt whitman's "leaves of grass" is on backorder at every bookstore out here, it's incredible.

Oh, I forgot to say in the initial post... The Godfather Returns was a huge disappointment. Mark Winegardner's imagination sucks! Basically all he really did for this book was put the existing characters and a few new characters into situations that happened in real life. He basically turned Johnny Fontaine into Frank Sinatra. Granted Puzo had influences from real-life mobsters, but he didn't put his characters into historic context and try to pass it off as fiction.

I read a ton. Besides reading technical software books for work, I read a lot of sci fi, physics, and heavy metal band biographies (just got done with GnR, on to Maiden).

But right now I'm reading "Undaunted Courage" by Stephen Ambrose. It's the story of Lewis and Clarke, amazingly good story. Those guys were brave, crazy, mo-fo's.

Stephen King, and Patricia Cornwell are 2 of my favorites. Also like Sidney Sheldon, true crime, and musician related bios/stuff.

I read way too much (comes with the territory being a science dork, I guess ); currently working on the ~800 some page behemoth "on food and cooking", which is absolutely incredible, and if you ever wanted to know anything about food or its preparation, it's in there.

(not exactly a novel, though; heh)

Ooo... great topic!
Ya'll have some good taste.

I am a voracious reader, and read everyday, usually several books at a time.
My three favorite authors are Stephen King (just finishing the Tower series now), Edgar Allen Poe, and J.R.R Tolkein.
I also enjoy Isaac Asimov, Tom Robbins (in the middle of "Still Life With Woodpecker" right now), Douglas Adams, Dick Francis, Robert Crais, all the Harry Potter books, Shel Silverstein, Barbara Kingsolver, and Benjamin Hoff.

I also enjoy non-fiction specific subject reading... like Botanical Chemistry, and books on the human psyche (REM being my favorite subject there).
I know, I'm boring.

Re: Recreational reading or TËKKŸ\'s book club.

Tekky, I can't read on the bus or train, or car, or plane, I get awfully motion sick.

However I do squeeze some books in.

A lot of my books are political in nature, I read the far left, and the far right, with everything in between, a lot of my life is political, so you HAVE to know BOTH sides of the fence.

I really enjoy things on WW2 Germany. I don't know why, but Nazi Germany spellbinds me. I can't get enough of the reading, or shows on the history channel.

I like books on philosophy.

I read the occasional Anne Rice novels (her stuff is starting to suck now that she's found God, because it's plastered through all the pages).

I try to read anything, but if it's stale or dry or uninteresting, I don't bother with it.

There was no caveat of having to read in transit.

I liked Robert R. McCammon's work. Stephen King, Koontz etc..
Don't forget the corn. It's nutritious, delicious, and ribbed for her pleasure.

I read every night and have since I was a kid. My parents hooked me on books as a youngster and I have never looked back.

Clancy and King were my guys for many years, with the odd Rand and Rice for good measure. Over the last few years I've been reading a lot of biographies and autobiographies.

Do Playboy and Guitar World count? I read the hell out of those two.

Thanks for making me sound like a drug pusher. They are just really good books - vampires, were-animals, demons, etc. Lots of great sex and lots of violence. But it's a great series. Her other series is heavier on the sex and is about the Fey Court and other creatures.

If you would just stop being so macho and just read them you'd understand. And before you say the chick lit thing again - there are guys who read this stuff and post on the Laurell K Hamilton site - of course that could be just to get to the women.
