Re: 14 guitars

Some people would or may call it 'hoarding' but it is a love or a sickness.
Tommy had a sweet-ass collection going.

Yo Don, tell your girl that at least you don't overpay and also that you don't possess the "not a drop" of self control disease like i did, and do.

I believe I do have that self control disease, but everytime it starts getting out of hand, I put on a U2 record, then my feeling for playing the guitar, or buying one, goes away.

Wouldn't it be a bit less painful to put your testacles on an anvil and hammer them flat???

It's a big circle Tekky. Yes it would be easier to hammer my testicles than to listen to The Edge, but it would piss my wife off if I had flatted nuts and ultimately affect my guitar buying status with her.

19 here, most are in different tunings so they all get played eventually.

I ended up selling a lot of them, because they weren't making me keep them. Does that make sense?

[/ QUOTE ]

That actually makes perfect sense but there are a few basic things that everyone should have for their collection.

E.g., everyone should have at least: one SSS, one HSS, and one HH tuned to standard pitch; one SSS, one HSS, one HH tuned 1/2 step down; one guitar tuned to dropped-D; 2-3 for open tunings; one 12-string electric; at least one 7-string; at least one primarily with a MIDI/HEX setup; at least one semi-hollow; at least one 6-string acoustic; at least one 12-string acoustic; at least one classical guitar; at least one bass; one guitar equipped with P-90s; a couple with oddball pups / configs / electronics; at least a couple that you find so infinitely cool that you could never sell them even if you never play them; at least 3-4 with intersting and unusual construction options (extended fretboards, fanned frets, metal bodies/necks, etc.); and if you're old enough to remember cool axes played by your guitar heroes of yesteryear but which are no longer made you'll also need a few of those. Did I miss anything?

So figure you really *need* at LEAST 30-35 or so just to cover the bare essentials. If you're like me and you need to own something for 6 months to a year before deciding whether or not it's a keeper you'll need to increase that number by, say, 50% or so as there'll be a constant flow of gear through your hands over the years as you do A/B comparisons on the slots in your collection that you're trying to fill and pick off the good ones. So in the end 45-50 or so at any one time is not only pretty easy to justify, it's almost a must.

I've really mellowed out on the guitar collection, down to 6 essentials, and I've been streamlining the rig too. It's about time for some new toys.

YetAnotherOne - classic, I'm going to print that and give it to people every time they give me crap about my collection, which is hovering between 35 and 40 at the moment as I pull off some trades and buy and sell some other things.

I was at 40, but I decided to start upgrading, a little more quality over quantity (old Les Pauls and signature models and such), but I still seem to end up at 38 or so anyway. Not to mention the 15 or so bodies and 12 or so necks I have laying around that I have yet to put together.

I'm more a player than a collector. If you're a collector, and that's what you do, great. Don't sit and tell me for one second that every one of 20+ guitars gets regular playtime, unless you're independently wealthy or have a job where you can just play guitar all day.

When I had 20+, not all of them got played. Some were just because I liked the finish, or the look of the guitar.

I can respect anyone who collects guitars, just the same as someone who collects cards, or cars or shit like that. To me though, to have 50 100 or 500 guitars is insane.

That said, I probably would have a different opinion if I didn't work and I could play them all the time.

Well that's kinda what I've done with mine. I've got 5 electrics (listed in sig.), a classical, an acoustic, and a bass. My mod 6 is HSS tuned to E, the Jackson Strat HSS tuned to Eb, one Wolfgang is E (drop D w/dtuna), the other is Eb (Db w/dtuna - love those things!), and my 7-string is a whole step down. I can play along with just about anything now!

Edit - well, I'm now in tune with just about anything. Actually playing along is another story.....
Unleash the fury.....Texas style!

Re: 14 guitars

I actually think I'm getting to the point of limiting my stable to somewhere around 10 or 12-ish. I just let one go, partially to keep in this range. And that's about where I'll end up, including the others I have on order.

That's not to say I'm done buying guitars. Just that I think this range is reasonably more than enough. And, for the most part, I expect to probably get into a mode of moving a guitar if I want to get another. Prioritizing, instead of just buying something cool. ..There'll always be exceptions to the rule, though.
