Overall, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. Way too many cultural "wink-wink, nudge-nudge" references that Tull fans have literally spent decades trying to sort out completely.
Syd Barrett's surreal tone poetry has to get some kind of special mention. Frank Zappa was like the stand-up comic of rock'n'roll. Dave Mustaine has come up with a lot of clever hooks.
