Re: Techies....do you hate Microsoft?
Many hate MS because of their questionable business practices. Despite their constant (ab)use of the term "innovate", they have innovated very little, and invented almost nothing of value themselves. Once they steal an idea, they then exploit their monopoly power to drive the actual innovators out of business. The general corporate culture at MS seems to foster poor ethics -- they even tried to cheat at the anti-trust trial by submitting edited video they claimed was a live shot, for which they were luckily caught. Unfortunately despite being ruled a monopoly, they got away with what amounts to a slap on the wrist.
Many web developers hate MS because they constantly ignore standards. Website developers must develop around IE's quirks, usually at the expense of other browsers. MANY sites out there today still work properly only with IE because of this.
Many users hate MS because their security practices are abysmal. A new PC hooked up to the internet will be infected with one or more worms/viruses usually before you can download the patches required to make it immune. As a result people who buy PCs also need to invest in expensive anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall software. Instead of expecting software to "just work", MS has created an environment where users are expected to jump through hoops and invest extra time and cash to get a computer that functions reasonably.
Luckily continued improvement in Linux/Open Source environments and the lowering prices for Mac systems may finally challenge the MS status quo.
