I'm pretty sure Han isn't in this one. However in the expanded universe story lines, he's not too far from connecting with Chewbacca.

At the end of the Clone Wars, due to the Emperor's distrust of non-humans (except for a particular Grand Admiral Thrawn), many non-humans are enslaved. It is Han, who at the time as an Imperial officer fresh from the Imperial training facility at Cardia, who sets Chewbacca free. Thus is the beginning of Chewie's life-debt to Han. (which in later story-lines he pays back in full)

Why did Han give it all up you ask? Han grew up as an orphan. Before he struck out on his own he was more or less a slave for a space pirate. Han's uncanny control over all sorts of craft made him one of the best swoop pilots the galaxy had seen. (kinda shows you how he got the skills to handle the "fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy") So the pirate would enter Han into races and bet on him to win, knowing the kid's skills he was a shoe-in. Also in the pirate's service was a female wookie who treated Han like her son. When Han escaped the pirate, the wookie was killed. Hence sparking Han's fondness for wookies.

I'm not reading books to fix plot holes in the movies. I fell for the Splinter of the Mind's Eye fake-out when I was 9, but that's it.

Suit yourself, but Splinter of the Mind's Eye was a mistake. Once the Zahn trilogy re-sparked interest in Star Wars, everything had to have continuity with the original books and had to be approved by Lucasfilm.

the only book I read was Shadows of The Empire. it was pretty good.

I tried reading some of those that take place after episode 6 and couldn't get into them. With the twin kids and all that bs.

I totally rule at Star Wars trivial pursuit though. Its only movie based, so I"m good to go. I have every nuance of those original movies completely memorized.

not a fan of hte last 2 so much. THey're alright..but nothing special about them at all.

They were approved by Lucasfilm but not really by Lucas for the most part. The Legacy Of Evil was approved by Lucas personally and is the one that fills in many of the Prequel Plot holes... So does the Clone Wars Cartoons which is pretty similar but there are some continuity errors between the two but both were approved by George himself not the widescope of the Lucasfilm stamp

I agree with what you're saying. However at the time of Splinter, there wasn't much of a concern with the continuity until Zahn wrote his trilogy. Since then, everything had to tie into the original books. Even that started getting out of hand and they had to re-focus on everything tying into not only the original books, but all of the other books as well.

I'm with Tekky on the geek thing. I haven;t read them in awhile, but i used to be obsessed as a kid. I read all of the licensed books. the Zahn Trilogy was awesome.

Eh I think the Zahn stuff was cool at the time just because it was fresh... So many better stories IMO since then and it looks like after EPIII Lucas is going to give more "rights" to the authors and more of his approval on the Extended Universe Stuff

really? I can easily see a TV show being introduced after it all Lucas said at some point before The Phantom Menace that he could see a TV series after it was akll said and done

Empire was in the works when Splinter came out. But the book made many contradictions of the movie (or vice-versa). Splinter was just a charade to make those who read (bought) it think they knew what the second movie was going to be about; that they were privvy to how the dangling plot threads of Star Wars were going to be resolved in the sequel. Oh, and a market tester.

If Splinter was a mistake, why is it still in print? It can't be because it's a "curious oddity," as that would also apply to the original movies.
