Re: Need help choosing an Acoustic Song Set List

I tend to go for the more obscure rock stuff when wanting to play covers... here's some great acoustic songs.

Savatage - Sleep
Father, Mother, Son - The Scream
Love Is on the Way - Saigon Kick
Never Loved Her Anyway - The Scream
October Morning Wind - Union
Goin' Where the Wind Blows - Mr. Big

Dokken also did a/an (mostly) acoustic album, there's some great versions of their songs on it.

Wow - lots of good stuff here. Me, I have to vote for the Savatage songs - Believe and Sleep. (I love Believe!). But a lot depends on your crowd and the type of stuff you play - As much as the guys hate it, a nice romantic ballad is great. Although girls won't always admit it, it's a great time for a guy to come hold you close!

Wow . . . . Saigon Kick

Shouldn't they be on VH-1, were are they now?

Actually, I like to play some Jimmy Buffett "folk songs" when I am having drinks on my patio with my acoustic; like Son of a Sailor. But this is purely for my entertainment/amusement and the neighbors usually laugh at me too).

AIC - Down In a Hole. Best song ever.

I don't get it, you feel they should be on VH1, does this mean that they didn't write anything good?

If you're looking for something more humorous, tenacious D will work out awesome. Nothing could beat Fuck Her Gently! It's kinda hard to do that live with a band because you're struggling to not laugh. Just run through it a few times and kill it by listening to it too much and you won't have to many problems laughing on stage. Don't kill it too hard though, you still want to have fun with it.

Now Now, I never said that they didn't wirte anything good.

I just said they should be on VH1 where are they now. Just like every other band on that same program, most people haven't heard anything more out of them since their "famous song".

I have nothing against them and have played their song many times and thought the guitar to "love is on the way" is very cool. It just triggers a Senior Moment when you said, Saigon Kick.

"lay your hands on me" acoustically done sounds great. (saw it on "an evening with bon jovi"), "here comes the sun" a beatles classic, "hot dog" a led zeppelin classic. "something to believe in" poison.

songs that got me laid doing solo acoustic gigs:

anything by dave matthews, especially "crash"
radiohead "fake plastic trees"
freedy johnston "bad reputation"
chris whitley "poison girl" (you guys should check out "din of ecstacy" by whitley...one of the best guitar albums of the 90s....)

but the ultimate panty remover (for me) has always been doing jeff buckley's version of "hallelujah". women LOSE IT when they hear that song.

i have done a LOT of solo acoustic gigs, and it's helped me be a better musician, and better singer, and make more money. i recommend it to anyone.

and you don't have to worry about your drummer or bassist putting the "cockblock" on your action!

Technically I have to agree, but at a bunch of the shows I've been too, the chicks love it. Me - that's generally the beer and bathroom break.

Most of my friends who grew up listening and playing metal with me in the 80s/90s moved out to Indianapolis and got into the indi/alt rock thing. From time to time I catch up with them and pick up something new from them. One night I met them at Martyr's here in Chicago for a Chris Whitley show. The next week, I bought everything in his entire catalog that I could find.
