Chico Suspends Fraternity Over Adult Film

CHICO, Calif. -- California State University in Chico suspended a fraternity after its members admitted they participated in an adult film at their off-campus residence.
The national chapter of Phi Kappa Tau also suspended the school chapter and is investigating the taping several months ago by Shane's World, an adult film producer known for using college students in its videos.
"We're definitely embarrassed by the allegations, but we're trying to figure out what happened," said Jeff Baird, spokesman for the fraternity's executive offices in Oxford, Ohio.
University President Paul Zingg described himself as "disgusted" by the fraternity's behavior. He promised further punishment and said it matters little that making a pornographic film isn't illegal.
"This fraternity will be dealt with in an unmistakably firm fashion," he told the Chico Enterprise-Record. University spokesman Joe Wills said it remains unclear what action will be taken.
Rick Rees, the university's associate director of student activities, said the fraternity's president apologized, admitting that "it was a bad decision."
Shane's World made the film in the Phi Kappa Tau House's private off-campus residence, though university officials said they were told the students neither identified their campus nor their fraternity. Wills said the fraternity was not paid for the film.
Shane's World publicist Nicole Henderson said the film also included some college women, though it was not clear if they were from Chico.
The company typically arranges a movie and sends porn stars and film crews to a party to make an unscripted film, she said. Students who participate play sex-themed party games and are rewarded with oral sex or intercourse, Henderson said.
All students who enter the party must sign release forms, be at least 18 years old and show identification, Henderson said. Students and the porn stars who work for Shane's World are tested for sexually transmitted diseases.
Chico State's fraternity system already was under investigation for the February death of a student who drank a large amount of water. The victim allegedly was being hazed by members of a fraternity that had already lost its school affiliation.
Four members of the Chi Tau fraternity have been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of Matthew Carrington, and four other members face lesser charges.
Zingg told the Los Angeles Times after Carrington's death that the incident was "the last straw" and that if the Chico fraternity system was found to be beyond repair, he would shut it down.
