Buy the Remington they are made in the USA and are far superior out of the box than anything else. Weatherby guns are very expensive to fix when they break and they will.Ifyou don't know a gunsmith in your town find one and ask him what he works on the most. You can get a great deal on Remingtons at Walmart.com You can also purchase your scope the same way. If you ever decide to get a custom look me up we have great prices and build to your specs.
I personally will never buy anything from Wal-Mart. If I can find a tool at a tool store, I buy it there, a game at a game store, a gun at a gun store. That's how I've always been.
I called the shop today before I went (It's an hour drive) to ask if they had the Weatherby 30-06 package deal. They were out of them, but they are getting some in, so I left my number, and I'm going to call back also.
I spoke to the gunshop, and I asked him if the gun is a good gun, and he said the Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic package is probably the best value on the market dollar for dollar. It's guaranteed to be a good shooter from the box, and they are stand up guns. He's seen very little problems with them.
Now mind you, I told him that I was in the 300-600ish range, and I'd have no problem buying the ADL Remington and putting a good scope on it, and he said by far, you're going to like this gun more.
If I pretty much told him I'd spend more money than this gun costs, and he still points me to it, then I don't think I'm getting peckered around.
I'll post pics of it whenever it comes in and I go buy it
My step father is Grizzly Adams long lost son. For dear hunting he used to swear by a Remington 700 in 30-06. Somewhere around ten years ago he won a Remington 700 in .270 in a raffle. He just doesn't use the 30-06's anymore. All of his 700's have wood stocks, not synthetic. He prefers the wood so he can remove the barrel, sand out the forearm of the stock to make the barrel "float".
We have a lot of timber, thick brush and mountainous terrain where he hunts. The .270 does a fine job in the brush, but that's where the 30-06 really shines in my opinion.
I feel like the .270 is your best choice for an "all around" round. Good for dear, and real good for the varmits. Heck, I used to pop off groundhogs with an old 22mag that would do some decent damage. When I got older I really liked a 22-250 for the varmits.
I do have a Ruger Mini-14 in .223 that would make a half way decent varmit gun, but I wouldn't want to hunt in the heavy timber with it.
