I don't give a flying fuck about email spam. You want to solve a problem along these lines for me? Get rid of REAL junk mail (you know, the kind you get in the physical mailbox). I have to take action on that stuff. I can no longer tell my useful mail apart from my junk mail. I have to open darn near everything so that I don't inadvertently throw away a real bill, Best Buy Rebate, or my winning Reader's Digest Sweepstakes entry form. I guarantee you that physical junk mail consumes dramatically more resources and time than junk email.

hehe, junk mail is the only thing that's keeping the post office open. you have no idea how much garbage i had to process when i wasn't unloading trucks. unbelieveable!!!

True, but the problem is a lot of murderers and rapists get paroled because there's simply not enough evidence to put them behind bars for life.

I'm glad this guy got 9 years, even though he probably won't do any of it hopefully it will be more of a wake up call to spammers. I hate people who waste my time.

I was thinking that as well Lev, but I have a strong feeling dude's gonna do some time here... And if it's federal, he'll do the sentence. It's about time someone makes an example for these clowns. And Sam, you're right on with the statement about these huge companies and the EPA, they don't care if they get caught and fined, they're still making more money at the end of the day by not paying the fees/licensing etc for proper disposal, etc etc , so it is profitable in some/most cases.

These laws have been in place for years now, and nobody's enforcing them, or haven't in the past, typically due to resources available to the court systems, etc. People tend to shy away from cases they don't know about, sure it all looks good on paper, but try schooling a jury on it and succefully prosecuting a case like this...

I know a lot about this first hand, my old neighbor (next door) was a spammer/junk faxer and EPIC used his company as an example of what NOT to do, listed dozens of felonies he was guilty of, etc and nobody around here would prosecute it, I even directly talked to the board here in Madison County IL about it... No go, it was passed on to the Attorney General here and that was the last I heard... Google Dialcentric sometime... That's one hell of a story there, maybe I'll share sometime, it'd take 2-3 pages to get it all in tho, it'ds make for a good bar story at NAMM... [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] Bottom line, as soon as I got involved and on his ass, he was gone and moved within a month, dude was so bad, his church threw them out...(true story) [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

So, care to expound on your statement?? Your objection carries little weight unless you put some actual thought behind it. I'll give you a little help by expanding mine.

I personally made the statement because this is part of some of the arguments I have heard not only from the general public, but from a person close to me who is a victim of a violent crime. Personally, I'd rather see a murderer or a rapist behind bars than someone who just sent me a few (hundred) pieces of email advertising sex, viagra, or cialis. Call me crazy, but I think the murderer or rapist is a bigger threat to society.

Tekky, I was a little confused by his post (& obviously he can speak up for himself), but the way I read it at first was that he was agreeing with you. I guess it's hard to tell whether he meant your sentence in the post or the sentence the spammer got. The "I'm w/ Stupid" graemlin isn't one of my faves, because some people use it when agreeing & others use it to ridicule a post. I've seen it cause friction a few times when no harm was intended. Just a thought...

Too true, bandwidth is expensive (just look at the rates charged by servermasters for more bandwidth!), however I'll be damned if this guy can rack up that much bandwidth by himself. (nothing personal Strangletooth)

Jail time, sure, but nine years? Unless he destroyed a bunch of servers with the intent of doing so, this seems extremely excessive.

How about make him join a anti spam orginization. If he doesn't get enough work done on said time, then send him to jail. That way, we minimize spam and he gets his punishment.


If you think about the internet, it can be compared to our lives. When we're driving around (browsing), we have something we have to do. I would think of popups as the equivelant of some asshole jumping on your windshield screaming that you need his product. As soon as you pull into your garage, among the boxes of your shit are a bunch of advertisements. Now your garage is disorganized, and you can't find your personal items. Not to mention, just how much can a garage hold?

Does this happen in real life? No. Do businesses still thrive because they can't do that? Yes. Smart businesses find a way. How do we advertise? We pay businesses to fly our posters, we pay media to advertise as well.

Why not pay internet sites to fly our banners? True, nobody likes banners on their pages, but at the same time if everybody was doing this, it wouldn't really matter anyway. We don't think less of any building because it has somebody's banners.

I've seen a couple posts now where it appears that pop ups are being mistaken for spam. Two totally seperate things. Maybe I'm just misreading what people are trying to say, but it just seems that some are confused on this issue.

Maybe I misread it, but both together seemed contradictory. However the words in conjunction wit the quote from me made me believe that his viewpoint was contradictory to mine. Which is fine, but show me the courtesy of posting something more than the equivalent of a literary fart.
