• RANT - So I get this email....

...from a guy saying he'll gladly give me $200 for my USA Gibson Explorer if it doesn't sell on Ebay (yes, the Bullseye).
I reply that despite the mods, it's still a USA Gibson Explorer underneath, and worth far more than a measly $200.

Then he emails me back, explaining his "philosophy" about the lowball, which is basically that he'd have to put out xx amount of money to get it refinished and whatnotted.

Then I explained to him something that I guess a lot of people can't figure out for themselves:

I bought it initially for over $500, then paid to have the mods done, then bought different pickups, which puts me close to $900 total to get the guitar in a state that I wanted it in, but am being told at every turn that I should have some consideration for the money that someone else will have to put out on it to get it in the state they want it in. This sort of thing is consitently expressed to me in a manner to suggest an obligation on my part, yet I'm the only person in the world who has this obligation, and may never lay any similar claim of my own.

Let me stress this to anyone who happens to pass by here:
I don't give a fuck what YOU want a guitar to look like. I do what I want them to look like at my personal expense. If what I do or pay to have done is not considered "popular" or "normal", so fucking what? To whom do I owe "a break" so that they aren't putting out the exact same amount of money I put out to make it look like and do what I wanted it to? No one owes me the same break, and I don't ask for one just because I want to do something different.

When and if I buy a black-on-black guitar (which I cannot stand because it simply looks stupid), it's because I plan to do something to it or pay someone to do something to it that makes it look like and do what I want it to. Whether it's a pro refin, Krylon, or just new hardware and/or pickups, it's MY decision and MY expense ON TOP of what I pay for the guitar.
When and if you buy it from me, anything you want done to it to make it look like and do what YOU want it to is YOUR expense ON TOP of what you pay for the guitar.
How difficult is that to figure out?

And don't even ask about the email offer of $125 + $30 shipping for the 1990 Soloist Pro which says "I can buy them locally for $400-$500 complete" - obviously I told him that he should jump on those offers IF he can find one

<font color="yellow">Newc....sadly it's human nature to an extent.

Everybody want's something for nothing and will use various means to get it (whatever "it" is).

I mean, how many of us have listed a high-dollar item or a unique item on E-Bay or here and gotten totally off the wall offers (cash, trade, or combination thereof).

As far as him "explaining his philosophy", he was basically trying to get you to see things from his perspective to meet his needs (in this case, financial).

Personally, I feel you are right in your thoughts Newc as far as "it's mine, I'll do with it what I want and if I decide to sell, do what YOU want". Makes sense to me.

This should get interesting

You go girl !!!
Bottom line is people always want a deal. They lowball and hope you will cave not knowing the time or effort you put in. On the other side, a buyer doesn't care or simply doesn't appreciate what kind of effort or expense that you put in it. A guitar is never worth what we want them to be. Exceptions obviously exist.
I've had people try and lowball me on ebay all the time and i simply refuse and move on. I'm not taking a hit because someone doesn't want to put up the scratch. It's worth more to me than that.

Re: RANT - So I get this email....

Most of what I've seen in other publicly-aired deals is the same -
- Seller has vintage axe for sale, modded in some way or another.
- Potential Buyer says "Dude, that price is too high. It's gonna cost $$$ to restore it"

However, even if it IS a 1983 SD Charvel or 1985 Jackson, there's no LAW that says it HAS to be restored to factory condition; the Potential Buyer WANTS to restore it. That is not the Majority Vote, and it is certainly not a requirement for owning it. That's an Individual Preference, and that expense is entirely said individual's.

I've said before, if you don't like the price, shop elsewhere. Why should I sell my Bullseye Explorer to someone who doesn't like it? Why should they even look at it? I have no desire for a Zakk Wylde Camo/Mirror Bullseye LP, so obviously I don't chase after them to have them refinished solid black. If I want a black LP, I'll get a black LP.
On the other hand, there could be someone who likes Zakk, wants a B/W Bullseyed Gibson, but doesn't like LPs, and would stumble upon my Explorer listing.

bottom line it's not original and it's not done. people will be looking at it from the point of what do i have to do to this thing.
if it was a car you'd get squat for it unless you sold it to just the right person.

Re: RANT - So I get this email....

Everybody gets the same sort of thing. E.g., someone emailed me about a guitar I had for sale recently and stated that the most overpriced dealer in their area had one at the same price as mine and therefore they knew mine was hugely overpriced and they'd be willing to pay no more than 60% of what I was asking ... despite the fact that two others had just changed hands in the same location where mine was listed at prices above what I was asking. I honestly don't mind lowball offers at all but I always wonder why people who make them often feel the need to explain them with some convoluted tale. That makes no sense at all to me and it certainly won't impact my reply.

I agree with Matt. I wouldn't ask a guy to lower his price because I want to have it refinished. I would just look elsewhere till I found something more appealing to me. There are a boat load of Explorers out there. No need to obsess over one that's been modded like Newc's.

Newc, I understand the frustration over the lowballs. However, the other aspect to this is the fact that your taste is so out there, you won't be able to gain back all the money that you've put into your creations. You have, er, unique tastes, and now you're finding the value of that taste.

This extends into non-modded guitars too. I laid off selling stuff here because they often led to insulting offers.
