thanks, this is really helpful right now.
delt, no offense, but if the average linux or linspire user got a corrupted boot sector (a phenomenon that has nothing to do with windows vs. linux) and couldn't boot, it wouldn't exactly roll off your tongue what the recovery procedures would be...the average person would have to look it up, call support, or send out the distress signals.
I'm not a Microsoft defender or apologist, but I'd be happy to discuss the merits (or lack thereof) of Windows relative to Linux...in another thread. Thanks.
confirmed that bootmagic correctly configured boot.ini to boot into the XP partition by default. as we could also get it to boot into 98 by default. I'm almost certain that budman's issue is isolated to the XP partition (possibly the boot sector, possibly ntldr/ntdetect.com got corrupted). the first link you posted above is what i'll walk him through tomorrow. thanks, soap! Glad to help.
Like taking care of our guitars...we must keep and maintain our PC's to work for us as well. I'll be keeping on eye on the thread tomorrow as well, so, if you need to, either post in the thread or PM me.
Peace, Love and Happieness and all that stuff...

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

Ya know what delt, I've had it with your comments. How is this helping me at all?!?! You seem to know every fukkin thing there is to know about everything. Maybe you should take a step back and look at your "helpful" posts sometime.
As for those of you that contacted me with help, it's really appreciated and especially George who put up with my frustrated self last night for an hour on the phone.
As for fixing it, I believe it's fixed but I did not go over the system very well this morning but was able to verify my info that needed to be saved. I remembered last night that I read somewhere that when you boot with the XP cd that when it gives you the choice to go to the repair console or to setup XP on your computer, that when you choose to have XP installed, it actually gives you yet ANOTHER option to repair your existing setup which I did. It looked as though is was redoing XP completely but in fact it was just "cleaning it up" so to speak.
Now again, I didn't have time to check everything but my important files are there and that's all that matters at the moment. Right now I'm at work but I tried to get on line with my PC at home and it worked perfectly which I thought was pretty impressive. While no operating system is perfect, I have to tell you, I'm pretty impressed how far windows has come.
Thanks again guys, you help was greatly appreciated. George, please feel free to call bro...
You were able to sleep with an ailing PC? I can't do that
Congrats on the recovery
And I do hate to trounce all over your thread, but this is pissin me off:
Delt (and whoever feels the same way) - When Linsux and Opensores and whatnot start giving away free copies of the Windows-based apps that are tailored for those OSes, which I don't have to remind you that 98% of Windows users have, and that cost thousands of dollars total, then you and your "anti-M$" buddies will have something to crow about.
Until then, all you have is a SuperGeek Operating System that actually does jack shit.
You know why those "other" systems are so stable? Because they don't have any **useful** apps that run on them, and therefore aren't taxing the system. Wow, you can email and surf without worrying about Windows-specific targeting? Golly gee, what a fuckin novelty.
Can you run 3D Studio MAX, Truespace, Maya, high-end audio and or video editing software on it? Sure you can probably do Photoshop. Adobe gurantees a version of that for every single OS, but what about all the other stuff that a lot more people use to make a living?
Can it run Macromedia's Shockwave/Flash editors?
Pro Tools?
Sonor?
Premiere?
Office?
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood
The most human thing we can do is comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
If a boot problem like this happens again and you aren't able to get it back, get a copy of NTFSDOS. It's a utility that will let you boot to a floppy and mount an NTFS drive volume. Then you can read it just like any old FAT-16 drive. It bypasses all of the Windows security, as well.
Huge props to Soap (Allan) as well! While busy at work last night, he took the time to find and send me some kick ass links to help budman out. Thanks, Soap!

Just an FYI - Yes you can run Maya natively on Linux,it actually smokes....Office too... and by using Terminal Services you can run most other Windows apps with no problems at all.
In my line of work (making movies) most if not all digital studios here in Hollywood use some version of *nix for their worksations and of course all the backend DB and file storage.
And lets not forget all the web sites running apache, mail servers,dns....etc...
I never did see the point of OS bashing (unless it's a mac ) as they all have weaknesses. At home I have 2 PC's which are only for playing games, all others are Linux which are very programmer friendly, and comes with all the free language compilers and RAD tools I could ever want, which compared to PC would cost serious $$$ for similar tools.
As far as stability goes,my Linux machines run without needing a reboot for months at a time. And in the event something does crash I can kill it off 99% of the time without bringing the machine down and losing data.
I think in the coming years you will see many more native apps running on Linux specifically which will put pressure on MS to be a little more open with it's source or take a big bite out of their profits.
Ok, I seem to be up and running again and I just did a full windows update and did need some updates that were possibly overwritten? It's running smooth so far and all is backed up completely.
Matt, as far as hitting the hay while my PC was ailing, it's either that or scrap about 2 weeks of work the next day by staying up all night with the damn thing. I had to at least get 4 hours of sleep
Powertube, thanks so much for the tip, I will make a copy of that. I may not know how to use it, but maybe george will talk me through if I need it
Allen, sounds like a big thanks goes out to you as well bro,
ok well, in that case i've had it with you too. i was maybe going to try to help but i'm so damn fucking sick of windowz, and now i'm sick of YOU.
have a nice life, loser.
