• Marty Friedman's TV show

I just came across this article on Blabbermouth:

Ex-MEGADETH Guitarist MARTY FRIEDMAN Is A Hit On Japanese TV - Apr. 28, 2005
Former MEGADETH guitarist Marty Friedman's official web site has been updated with the following message:

"The [Japanese] TV show 'Hebimetasan', which features Marty each week as a regular, is a smash hit! The premise of the high-energy show is to introduce, explain and have fun with (as well as make fun of) heavy metal/hard rock music to the mainstream, for people who would otherwise have no contact with the genre, such as the show's host, idol/model Yoko Kumada (think discussing the merits of the likes of VELVET REVOLVER, SOILWORK and ANDREW W.K. to Cindy Crawford or Anna Kournikova). Each week in 'Marty's Metal Spirit in Japan' Marty exposes the unlikely links between Japanese folk music and heavy metal hits. The overwhelming response to the show has put Marty and Japan's top television production company into talks of an exclusive contract. More news here as it develops.

"Marty is also the featured guest on 'Tokyo Style Shakaijin No Susume' ("Focus on society people Tokyo style") a highly rated show on TV Asahi. A different segment featuring Marty will be aired each week for 4 weeks in May. Each week will feature a different interview with Marty. Among other things, he will discuss his latest song, 'Street Demon' which is the theme song for Japan's top soccer TV program FC 'Tokyo Hotline' (shown every Thursday and Saturday).

"In recording news, Marty took a break from his solo album recording schedule to play guitar for AVEX artist Arashiro Beni's next single. The song will be released on June 1st and will be performed during the halftime show when the NFL comes to Japan for their exhibition game. The song was produced by multi-platinum producer CMJK (AYUMI HAMASAKI, HITOMI, PENICILLIN)."

I for one think this is amazing news for Marty! TV shows about metal, playing sessions, new solo album in the works, all amazing stuff.

What I never got is that every time Marty is mentioned there's always the people who seem to be there just to talk crap about him. Sure he left Megadeth but still he's putting out music and doing what he loves, loves now! They become personally offened it seems because Marty had some personal growth and followed his muse away from Megadeth.

Really, what's the problem? He's still playing music, he's till putting out albums, he's doing well for himself but metal fans seem to be nutz over the fact that he left Megadeth. 'Deth's my favorite band and Marty's the reason I even play but all this trash talking and calling him names is just childish has to stop (although I'm hoping for too much when it comes to ignorant metal fans).

some people (the metalheads) talk sh1t about Marty because he is a very open minded (he likes and plays all kinds of different music) and he isn't a big metal fan. That's the only reason I see. Those who talk shit about him, get-a-life, metal is not the only good music in this world.

As far as I'm concerned he made Megadeth interesting to listen to. Megadeth is my fav metal band by a long long way, and it's not cause of Dave. Since Marty left, Megadeth has had no real good album or song.

That said, the guy is a fuckin friutloop.

I have to agree. I haven't liked anything Megadeth has put out since Marty has been gone. He is a weirdo though. After the Toronto show a few years back, we were talking to the guys, and Marty was staring into space with his mouth hanging open half the time. Dave M was actually pretty cool, and we had a good chat about gear. He certainly made no hint of being unhappy with his Jacksons at the time.

Personality aside, (I've never met the guy) Marty Friedman is a monster player and one of my favorites. His stuff with Cacophony, Megadeth and his solo albums is flat out brilliant. Good for him that he's having success on TV over in Japan. It's a shame that shit like that doesn't happen over here, at least not in the mainstream.

Hey, if I wasnt already 6'3 I would wear boots like those!

Kidding aside, marty's one of my heros and it really bothers me when people talk crap about him. When I met him years ago on the Risk tour (first show of the tour in NY) I told him how he inspired me to play guitar and he was truly touched. He took me aside and talked to me about listening and learning from all sources I can find. Then he gave me one of his guitar picks and gave me a hug.

                    Re: Marty Friedman\'s TV show

Marty's guitar work and Nick Menza's drumming MADE Megadeth. Mustaine likes to hint that those guys didn't matter, but Marty, Nick, and David were part of the biggest album sales in thrash metal. Without those guys, it's just Smegmadeth. Best of luck Marty!

You're right, of course. I've always found it interesting that Alex Skolnick doesn't cop the same kind of abuse for following his muse. Maybe because it was jazz instead of J-pop
