• Yahoo Mail now up to 1 GIGABYTE storage space!

Talk about overkill!

http://whatsnew.mail.yahoo.com/

Yahoo has now upgraded my inbox to a whopping gigabyte of space earlier today. Who else is enjoying their "We're trying to match Gmail" inbox so far? This is twice the amount of space that was offered on my first computer's hard drive back in 1996!

Quite impressive.

BTW: My first computer had a 20 meg Seagate HD in it and ran only on DOS...

Yup, and Gmail just keeps going up! That little counter keeps adding and adding!
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

do people actually use email for storage? I certainly don't and a gig or 2 for email is about 100X than I'll ever use

I have a 2gb yahoo plus! account (no banners, pop3 access, etc), and with 700 messages in my inbox (most being just text/html), I don't think I broke the 6% mark for disk space. Hell, 100mb should be more than enough for most people who don't hang onto shit forever like I do!

Yahoo mail has upgraded the regula rmailing account to 1GB but I actually get more junk mails than ever now.

Maybe because they think I have more space to receive mails, I have to receive all these junk mails?

Because Outlook has a 2G limit on its PST file format, a lot of people store their email in OL, then save off the attachments in a parallel directory structure in the file system.

Now if google can index and search the world's entire set of html pages, they're saying don't worry about organizing your stuff in folders...either in Outlook or the file system. Just dump it in one big place. They have the search engine to be able to pull up anything you store.

Also, Google is backed up! Unlike the state of affairs for most people's computers. You know how many disasters are waiting to happen with the popularity of digital pics and storing the only copies on a single hard drive that can crash at any moment? Want to backup a digital picture forever? Send it to your gmail address.

Apple is starting to implement these ideas with their Tiger OSX release. You just type the stuff you want in a toolbar and no matter where it is on the file system, it will pop up in a results list. No more searching through a bunch of directories or running that pathetic Microsoft Search tool.

Basically, we're all heading towards a world where we can say goodbye to folders and trying to manage them. And search will replace our need to proactively organize things.

I don't think Bill Gates shares the same sentiments...

We're not talking about your Daddy's search. If you're doing Start->Search to find a lost document on your hard drive and are happy with a 20 minute search, then nothing to see here...

If you're using the new Google desktop search on Windows or OS X Tiger and are using this feature then that's what I'm talking about. It also happens to be the cornerstone of the next version of Windows.
