Re: NO ONE will guess this sound!

Wow! Sounds like a crazy contest on a Belgian radio station or something. Good luck!

Re: NO ONE will guess this sound!

Yup they have it regularly. The way it works is, everytime (every hour) someone doesn't give a correct guess to what the sound is, €50 or €100 is added to the overall prize.

The sound was always guessed in a couple of hours or two days max. But it's been going for a damn long time now, since no one seems to know what the hell it is exactly.

Hence me plea to JCF and Newcenstein!

Wow man, you are thinking WAY too deeply into this. The sound of someone with very dry hands? Multi-sided dice? Praying position dice shaking rather than single handed cupping dice shaking? Wearing a freakin' ring? REVERSING THE AUDIO?

Not only does the mad Dr Newcenstein take apart guitars and puts them back together in monsterish ways, he will also do the same to any audio you have up anywhere.

[/ QUOTE ]

I draw my influence from "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group, not Mary Shelley's version

Here's a rundown of my "Deductive reasoning":

#1 - Dry hands annoy me. To hear someone brushing them together is even more annoying. It's a sound that sticks with you

#2 - I've played so many board games as a kid that I know the sound of dice rolling in one hand. I know the sound of dice rolling in two hands cupped togther. I know the sound of dice held between two hands layed flat together and rubbed/rolled that way. I also know that in each instance, the sound is very clacky and piercing, even when muffled. A metal ring against 2 plastic die adds to the continuity of sound, sort of like a slapback delay effect. Smoother dice (such as 10-sided D&D dice) don't clack as loud as 6-sided dice.

So, with that knowledge:

-It's obviously the sound of something light being dropped a short distance, and if it's a contest it can't be something abstract like "sound of the guts of a 35mm camera falling down the sink drain with the theme to Bonanza played on a ukelele and inverted", it's gotta be something you hear every day but not instantly recognizable because it's never an isolated sound. So; small, light, dropped from a short distance - gotta be dice, because....

--The impact doesn't sound like a wood, glass, or plastic table. It sounds like plastic wood. Obviously plastic is plastic and wood is wood, and it sounds more woody than plasticy, so it's gotta be very thin wood. There's also a "contained" aspect to the sound, like it was dropped into a shallow wood box, like a backgammon board.

---If it's dice, then the crackling/crinkling is the dice being tumbled, but not in a cup as you normally find, because that gives a distinct tone. Can't be cupped in one hand because that's always got a rhythm, or it sounds like a can of paint being shaken. Can't be two hands cupped because it sounds a lot like the dice being rattled in a cup. So it's gotta be "Granny rollin" between the palms.

-At 0:02:118 there's a distinct drop in the sound - a bump from a splice of some sort. At first I thought they may have sampled a piece of the first section, reversed it, then pasted it in just before the "drop", so I reversed just that part. It sounded like the first half, so I reversed the first half instead, and it sounded like the second half.

The impact sound is definitely giving off reflections from a solid surface (room reverb) or they've added to it to try and mask the sound even further. Microphones are far more sensitive to flat-surface reflections anyway, so they probably didn't modify it.

Unfortunately, the more I listen to it, the more it sounds like hard candy in a plastic bag being spilled on a table
(kinda like the Ziploc baggie of Lemonheads by my computer )

Shit! I'm exhausted just from reading the good Dr.'s posts in this thread alone. I thought it was a piece of hard candy being opened and dropped on a table.

Re: NO ONE will guess this sound!

Yup, but there's been tons of people that made guesses like that

From candy, to papers being stapled together to fries being prepared to pens being used and dropped, to... ad infinitum.

Those were all 'too obvious', but your Dice theory is something no one has come up with yet, and no one i've talked to was even remotely close to thinking that way, mostly due to that extreme plasticy sound.

But in that reversed clip you can hear clothes russling together so well, it HAS to be something involving hands or arms being shaken or moved a lot, thus adding strength to the dice theory!

Once again NewC, I thank you!

(And God, for making someone messed up enough to come up with this shit j/k bro! )

Re: NO ONE will guess this sound!

sounds like something lifted from a video game. the very last noise sounds like an approxiamtion of a typical "door opening noise"
or
it's a bug skittering across a hard floor then getting stepped on by a booted foot.

I think it's dice also.

A bit of an anti-climax here. Just checked the site and 'rolling dice' was already said and was incorrect. That's a serious bummer.
