• Exciting summer jobs? Casino? Strip club? Bartend?

I'm in a little trouble. Normally by now, I'm already starting my summer job for the four months of summer (May-August). However, this year I'm without a job so far, and it's nearly mid-May already. I'm browsing websites like http://www.monster.ca and http://www.working.com for a summer job and turning up stuff that either doesn't interest me, or that requires me to be bilingual (English + French), or that requires a university science graduate which I am not yet (one more year 'til graduation).

I don't want minimum wage, and I don't want to work in retail, nor fast food, nor grocery stores, nor any of the typical "young people summer jobs". For the past five years, I had a wicked summer placement with a government lab situated just minutes from my house that paid very well and actually applied to science, not to mention my colleagues who were absolutely a pleasure to work with. Unfortunately, this year they cannot hire me back as they're looking more for a university freshman who will be assigned menial work for a lower wage, rather than the higher paying technicial position getting paid more and more with every passing year in my case. They're going through cutbacks or something. It sucks because this facility is absolutely perfect in that it's only minutes from my house, and I've networked with many of the staff members there over the years and hoping to get a great full-time position there upon graduation. Doesn't look so good now.

Three jobs completely outside the realm of science that I've briefly considered to be exciting and perhaps for a refreshing change of pace are working in a casino dealer, being a strip club DJ (I think I've got that deep enthusiastic/authoritative "voice of God" they might like) but not a strip club bouncer (I'm too non-threatening ), or being a bartender. I have no experience with any of these but they sound intriguing... never had such a "social" job before so it could boost my interpersonal skills greatly. I dunno how my parents would feel about the strip club DJ thing though.

*Sigh*... any other suggestions from you folks? Last resort for me will be to fill out a profile on the government FSWEP site (http://www.jobs-emplois.gc.ca/fswep-...nt/index_e.htm) or to take that retail/sales job at a new musical instruments store opening near my area. I made a lot of money Truck Driving for an electrical contractor when I was in college. Pass the drug test, have a clean driving record, don't be afraid of labor and you can make some pretty decent dough that way.

Another thing we do "down here" is work offshore on drilling rigs. You can make upwards of 15k-20k doing that, too. I know you don't have an "offshore" up there but it still may be an option with the land based rigs.

Just some thoughts...... Good Luck on the search.

The trucker job sounds potentially interesting, as I've heard they do get paid very well and I don't mind being away from my family for any length of time, but I also have to keep in mind that I'm also doing summer/night school courses so that could interfere with job choices, especially with non-standard working hour jobs like being a trucker. Even those "typical nighttime" jobs I mentioned (bartender for example) could be fixed so that I could work on nights that I don't have classes or something. This summer blows. It's fun so far, but blows job-wise.

Male stripper? Nobody wants to see me naked. Check the MP3 section of this forum for my nakedness. Not a good response.

I've bartended in some awesome dancings. I personally found it awesome. I'd pick the DJ in a stripclub, though! What and AWESOME job would that be!!

Hmmm, or I could be the coat-check guy at the entrance to the strip club. But I doubt they get paid very well, and they barely talk to anyone...

I found one! I saw this the other day and was thinking about it again today:

http://www.lapdance.com/dream_job_search_2.htm

GOR, tell me more about your job there. How was your salary, compensation, and all that boring stuff that actually entails the job rather than the obvious "fun" aspect?

As far as $$ is concerned, it was definitly good. Since it was a nightly job (9.30 pm until' 4am at least) it was in a higher salaryrange, I made like $7/hour at the grocery store, I easily doubled that at the bar.

Well I loved the dancing! I go to dancings/disco's/party's a lot! Just clubbing, dancing with hot girls, drinking.

Eventhough you had to work (and it was quite hard work in the busiest hours) you were still enjoying the entire atmosphere of the club, the lights the pounding dancemusic at 50.000 or so watts, the hot chicks hanging around, friends coming by. (Btw Bartenders GET a lot of SNUFF!)

COmparing it to a Stripclub DJ, though, I dunno!

Re: Exciting summer jobs? Casino? Strip club? Bart

Damn, I was thinking my ideal bartending hours would be between 6:00pm and 2:00am, a nice typical "8 hour day" that I'm used to working.

Yeah, I was thinking of those exciting jobs in order to meet women. Actually, I couldn't care less about the salary, just as long as I enjoyed it and learned what they can't teach you in school.

Atommy, I cannot afford to be unemployed this summer... gotta pay tuition for next year. And it'd be a boring summer without a job. I prefer to be constantly doing SOMETHING, as I've found that my pre-working summers were just spent doing very unproductive things. I've been off for the summer for two weeks now and I've not done ANYTHING worthwhile other than attending my summer class at night.

Work in a hotel, meet a lot of people, always something going on, overall, it's fun. It's great for your social skills also.

Well, we call it 'HoReCa' in Belgium (Hotel/Restaurant/Café). That's the name of that side of the businessspectrum with those three types of business. And in Belgium and Europe in general, they're some of the worst jobs imaginable.

They rip you off with extremely low salaries, they dog you at work HARD and they're unfriendly, further more you'll probably get sacked rather soon for a cheaper laborer.

If it were in Europe I'd immediatly advise you to stay clear of Horeca, but seeing as you're in The States, north America (more precise: Canada) I can't really judge the situation.
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

Seriously, find a manufacturing facility. Factory work sucks, and they generally pay you more than McDonald's and similar "teenager" crap jobs because they know the work sucks. Don't be afraid of getting your hands dirty, but take whatever precautions you have to take to keep them safe (work gloves, etc).

I've had the job I have now for 5 years and make $30K a year. Yeah it ain't much compared to those Tech-type jobs, but it's a relatively easy job (press operator) and I have two Custom Shops on order
Besides, it's only for the Summer, right?
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

I have no idea about the hotel, restaurant, and cafe service industry here. But the three worst jobs here to me are retail/grocery/McDonald's. I absolutely refuse to work in those typical teenager jobs. I'm not even a friggin' teenager anyways. Although the guitar store position is looking mighty tempting right now... As well as the sports equipment store.

I'm seriously wondering about that lap dance critic job though... sounds bogus but at the same time sounds very interesting and easy!

Thanks Newc, however I haven't seen many of those factory-labor related jobs on the job listings sites I've visited all day today. I don't mind doing repetitive work, as it gives me a lot of time to think. Gonna still keep my eyes peeled though! And yes it's just for the summer, between May to August.
