Speed is just one aspect of ones playing. If you have it and use it wisely it can be really cool. If its the only color you paint with then your picture is gonna suck [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] Same goes with slow-hand playing. The more you have available to use the better you can express yourself.
I never 100% believed in starting in the blues. Where you end up has a lot to do with where you start. Can this kid play with feeling, I bet he can. Can a player stuck the pentatonic box or a bonafied Chuck Berry lick type of player play a fast melodic run like that? Maybe.
I really tire of all the shredder vs. feel debates. I come from both schools but if there is no melody it doesn't matter. I like speed as much as the other guy but dudes like Rusty Cooley are great players from a technical standpoint but to me sound very cold.
This kid is only 11 for heavens sake. I think he was playing something already written, either Paul Gilbert or parts of some violin piece, very classically influenced stuff. The kid deserves an atta boy instead of the shredder ridicule imho.
