bad seed, Ed always said that Clapton was his main influence, but the fact is that THERE ARE NO FUCKING CLAPTON IN ED'S PLAYING, ZERO 000000

Hands down best solo ever was.........Nirvana, Smells Like Teen Spirit

Hangar 18 gets my vote.

There are too many to list, but here's a few.

Randy Rhoads - "Mr. Crowley", "Over the Mountain"

Van Halen - "Mean Street" (not just the intro, the main
solo is bad ass!)

Vito Bratta - "Little Fighter"

Kirk Hamster - "The Shortest Straw"

Gary Moore - "Shapes of Things"

George Lynch - "Breakin the Chains" (I love how he rakes into the first note of each phrase).

Rust in Peace came out in the 90's

I like Mr. Scary a lot for the simple fact he sounds possessed when he recorded that...It rocks!

(There was something wicked coming out of George that day )

Also, the first track on Jason Becker's "Perpetual Burn" is just too freaky awesome

I agree with Hangar 18, but technically didn't Rust In Peace come out in 1990?

Eddie , Randy and Yngwie changet the way guitar was looked at in ever way possible...from custom and modiefied...guitars to Amps..

Locking vibratos. , one pick up guitars , high gain amps , tapping , shred...you name it ...they did it...especially Ed.

that is FACT ..you can NOT deny that..

I Treat others the way they treat me...that is what I do..if you don't like it...go pound salt..i don't give a rats' ballsack..

My opinion is the only one that matters because it is fact..so there.

Bill, if you want to start a thread on who influenced who, etc., go right ahead. And - as usual - why you're right and everyone else is an asshole.

But none of that matters to the question here. So, otherwise, please STFU.

Re: Best Guitar Solo of the 80s?

yep...ED , Randy and Yngwie brought everything we love about shred to the forefront ...PERIOD!!!

who cares who "inluenced" them...Blackmoore , Uli , Holdsworth etc ...all great players...but nobody knew or gave a flying fuck who they were..except for those above three..

those were the ones that really mattered...there was many greats that took the ball and ran with it...all disciples of these guys...whether they know it or not..

Even If you HATE Ed , Randy or Yngwie and play a guitar , with a scallopped neck , a floyd , designer pups , hot rodded amps...and just about any other amp or guitar mod or playing technique , scales , modes , TONE or anything we discuss on this forum is due to these fuckers..

Well Bill, if you wanna start like that.

Everything you discuss on this forum is due to Hendrix, Elvis and countless others.

OK, well this is so tough. I will go into several genres since the world does not completely revolve around metal!!

These are not in order, but are some of my favorites of the era:

1. EVH-Push Comes to Shove;
2. EVH-Beat It;
3. Scotty Hill-I Remember You;
4. Scotty Hill (or Dave, not sure)-Wasted Time;
5. SRV-Life Without You (never heard it? LISTEN TO IT!);
6. Lynch-Burning Like a Flame;
7. Lynch-Just Walk Away;
8. Lynch-Heaven Sent;
9. Eric Johnson-last solo in "Trademark";
10. David Gilmour-Live solo from Sorrow (DSOT);
11. Knopfler-solos from the song "Brothers in Arms";
12. Moore-King of the Blues.

Those are just some that I can think of now. As you can see, I have alot of slow, melodic solos in here because I think they really bring out an artist's talent and emotion. I find the Lynch solo from "Just Walk Away" to be my favorite of all of his solos...it just screams every time I hear it, and it may be his slowest solo.
Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

Sorrow is amazing, specially on the PULSE live album, Gilmour owns.
