Re: Signiature Model Guitars - Love\'em or Hate\'em?

I will never own a "Signature" guitar unless it's my signature on it.

Edit: Never mind the fact that my current main guitar is a modded Robert Cray Strat!

Re: Signiature Model Guitars - Love\'em or Hate\'em?

I have no issue whether a guitar is a signature model or not - If it's a guitar to my tastes, I'll like it no matter what 'famous' connection it might or might not have.

My one gripe with signature guitars is when they're not basically the same as the artist's guitar: I've mentioned it before, but I just can't get my head round the bolt-on part of the ESP KH2, or the Floyd on the ESP Hannemann!
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

I have no problem playing signature guitars.
Signatures on the headstocks don't bother me.

Re: Signiature Model Guitars - Love\'em or Hate\'em?

Generally speaking, I shy away from replicas of artist's signature graphics. But there are so many of them out there that 90% of the general population out there doesn't have a clue who's associated with what. They just think that it's cool looking. ...So the five guys in the audience who are also guitarists will know. Big whoop. So, if it's something immediately known, I usually shy away. But, IMHO, that applies to very few graphics.

That all said, the EVH graphics are some of the few that fit within the "known by the general pop" category. I'd probably never play one live. ...Kind of like running out of underwear before laundry day, and wearing your roomate's boxers. I'd rather "go commando". But that didn't stop me from buying an EVH anyway. And I'm enjoying the HELL out of it. (In my own house. ) And my non-guitarist musician friends think it's cool as all hell, too.

As to non-graphic signature guitars, I don't mind them at all. But I absolutely HATE signatures on the headstock. That ought to be banned. Otherwise, these are nearly unknown by the general pop. I love the PC1. It has a lot of cool and unique specs going for it. Quite frankly, most of what I look for in a more "modern" (post-80s) guitar design.

The sig on the PC1 doesn't bother me one iota, though. It's reasonably small, and looks like freakin' random chicken scratch. The (very) few people who have ever noticed it, had to ask me what it meant. I could've told them it was my own signature, and they probably would've believed me. ...Contrast that with the EVH logo, though. No doubt, that one is flat out obnoxious - should've been on the back of the headstock. ...But, again, it didn't stop me from buying one. I suppose I'll get used to it eventually.

"2) I've always DESPISED artist signiatures on headstocks. I think it looks retarded and I refuse to buy stuff with it there."

When I placed my order for the new Michael Schenker V, I expressly asked that the name not be put on the front of the headstock. I was told that Michael would be signing the front, not the back. To me, it totally phucks up the appearance.

My two guitars right now are sig models, a Jackson Y2KV and an ESP Stephen Carpenter six string. I could care less that they're artist model guitars, matter of fact I've never even heard a Deftone's song before. I am a fan of Megadeth and Dave Mustaine, but it could be the Purple Teletubby sig model and I'd still buy one and play it because it sounds, play and looks good. I don't get bothered either with signatures on the head stock, I actually kind of like the "src" scribble on the ESP.

Doesn't matter to me I'm good either way.
My ESP lynch model is serving me very well, no complaints.
I do think the next time around I'll mostly go the self built custom made route.

I'm not fussy either way, although paying extra for a guitar because of its association with someone doesn't sit well with me. I bought a Steve Lukather sig. Ibanez years ago, without knowing who SL was - I just wanted that guitar! Also got a Zakk Wylde Gibbo, but I'm a fan & the white custom with the bullseye looks cool - I love Les Pauls & wanted a custom, so it all came together nicely. Currently looking at the EVH Charvel - but it's too costly for what it is - & the PC1, although I'm no Phil Collen fan. The PC1 has a combination of things I want - maple neck & fingerboard, 24 frets, quilt top (chlorine), sustainer, Floyd - although if I could get a non-signature with the same features (and removing the centre PUP), I'd jump at it - likely to cost less than the PC. If you are aspiring to become famous or on the way to.. you are better off staying away from signature guitars that promote other musicians rather than yourself. If you just rip it up for the fun of is than I think signature models of your favorite players guitar are COOL...
