Spare the rod, spoil the child....When I got paddled in school, I got it with the belt when I got home.... I grew up well adjusted, never arrested or spent the night in jail.... Just goes to show that the left-wingers, judges, and attorneys have put far to many restrictions on parental rights.
I run a tight ship at our house, when we visit people at their house I'm told that I have the most polite and "well mandered" children that they have ever seen. They say please and thank you and don't run around like little "urban savages". My 10 year old Damian came home from school doing the hand signs and the "yo yo yo" ebonics shit a few months ago.... Needless to say that shit stopped promptly.
Just goes to show that to be a parent YOU must take charge EARLY to be respected by your kids. They will listen, or else there are consequences.

Wow. I'm 17, played every single GTA* since they came out, listen(ed) to rap, used to watch MTV, IM all the time, home alone after school for a number of years in elementary school, etc, etc and guess what? I'm fine. That's not to say my parents didn't/don't take an active role in my life, they do, it's just that they weren't reactionary Nazis to whatever the newest scapegoat was. Blaming that stuff is an excuse for weak parenting, or just plain stupid kids. Back in the the 20s it was zoot suits and jazz or whatever. Now it's rap and ubiqitous cell phones. The sky has been falling for years, but it still looks clear enough to me.

*Which my parents bought for me. My dad told me about the hooker trick in GTA3, actually.

Every generation does this. Its funny. Every new generation is somehow worse than the one before it. (according to their predecesors(sp?) Don't worry...they'll grow up. Sooner or later.

When I was 11, if anyone told an older adult to fuck off, that kid got slapped down by the old person, and if they called a cop or their parents, they got slapped down again for saying that to an adult, and the parents apologized to the person for their child's behavior. The cop also bitched out the kids and the parents about being respectful towards elders, and that "Little Johnny" was on the fast-track to going to jail if he kept it up, because the cop knew first-hand that a child that is an asshole grows up to be an adult asshole and usually ends up in jail with the other assholes.
If the parents bitched about someone telling them how to raise their kids or said "I can't control him", the cop was quick to recommend a juvenile center for the kid to live in, at which point the parents and the kid suddenly found it within themselves to straighten up.

What's wrong? What isn't wrong? Its a combination of everything. Bad examples being set, bad friends, bad schools, bad environment surrounding them, bad media, bad pop culture, and in a lot of cases poor parenting (in the sense of not being a parent). But at the same time, each of these things are just one piece of the puzzle. If you're raising a kid, doing everything right, and they just seem to not be going the right way, chances are there is something else in the equation.

But at the same time, people get out of life what they put in. Some folks choose to sit around and be assholes that make it tough for everyone else, or be criminals and steal stuff or kill people. Others choose to just do nothing and medicate themselves with drugs, booze, or whatever their favorite vice is. This is all done because its so much easier to just give up and be a drain on everyone else instead of do things for yourself. Its easier to be dependent on other people than be independent. Everyone's so impressed by stories of people who grew up in ghettos or had no parents or had a shitty life and they still worked through it and ended up reaching a goal; it is kind of a sad world that we live in where that is such a rare occurance.

Basically, parents, society, blah blah blah can only do so much. At a certain points the teens have to start doing their own thing and take over for their parents. Sometimes the wrong choice is made and they screw up, but that's part of growing up.

I don't know if it is my attitude...but I don't let these kids have that kind of power..

LoL. Oh man, I remember my mom now. She brought the belt, spoon, book, whatever she could find to me when I deserved it. Goddamn, she was going through some other stuff and I just drove her over the edge for small things, but I learned and no one ever had a problem with me, as a small child to now. I'm not saying beat em into a coma, but when words, the punishment corner or whatever doesn't work, a kick in the ass or two will do it. I couldn't raise my nephew like that though, but for some reason he really is the exception. He's a kickass kid, dosen't behave badly or anything. He's got a smart mouth, but in a funny way, he never intends to be rude unless he's in a pissy mood. And if he goes to far, he'll even apologize. I can't even say what his parents did to him to make him so well behaved/respectful. We kinda always talked to him as an adult (at 4 he's using big words, but not like some kinda over-achieving kid jackoff ya see on TV) and we always told him the consequences of his actions since he was smaller, so guess that stuff in engrained in his head now. Now the most he does is drive his mom nuts singing Master Of Puppets and headbangin round the house. If I acted up as a kid, like disrespecting someone, I got my ass whipped by them, and then by my mom. One rule my mom had was you never told anyone to "shut up". You could say "be quiet", or any other POLITE term. One day we were in a store and she said something (we were joking around about something) and I said "oh, shut up". The next thing I remember is picking my ass up out of the aisle with my face stinging like hell. I NEVER said that again, and I don't to this day...lesson learned. Although my mom did apologize for smacking me in the mouth, she believed kids had an ass for whipping. I believe you act like you are raised to act. Parents who don't care have kids that are trouble. If a kid ever figures out they can get the upper hand, that parent is toast.
