Re: The official \"What\'s your guitar website\" thre
and here's the story behind the stripes....
i hadn't been playing in a band for a few years, and i wound up joining that kiss trib band in 2001. it was a lot of fun, and the cool thing was that i never got nervous for a show or anything; i could kinda hide behind the makeup and boots, so to speak. i never really had an issue with nervousness or anything, but it was comfortable being....someone else for a little bit, and still doing something i enjoyed; playing out.
while i was playing in the trib band, i rejoined an old band i had been in a few years earlier; they were all good friends and if nothing else, it was kinda cool to play other stuff. of course, i couldn't help stumbling around like ace; i'd been doing it long enough that i adopted some of his mannerisms. kinda weird, but it happened.
anyway, the other guys in the band all looked like they were in a band, if you will, and they were all still living the life. i hadn't been for years, since i was a parent, and stuff. when we got that gig that the pic was taken at, i was self concious and nervous as hell because i felt i looked like some dude in an old navy commercial with the rest of the guys looking like a band. i didn't have an ace suit i could hop into, y'know? yeah, i understand it's superficial, but hey, i came from the glam era. that kinda shit is embedded in my psyche, so to speak. i didn't really think too much more about it until the show drew closer; we saw an ad for the gig, and the promoter described us as a glam band (totally inaccurate, no one wore makeup, and the music wasn't really poppy and glammy)! my drummer george and i were laughing about it, and he decided that he was gonna don the tommy lee stripes. i started laughing and said i'd do nikki sixx stripes, seeing as we were apparently a glam band.
....then my wheels started turning as i drove home from rehearsal; what if i mixed some of ace's makeup with the sixx stripes? that way, i could still kinda hide behind the makeup a little bit. so yeah, that was the story behind my silver and black security blanket. and yeah, there were many times i caught myself aceing it up a little on the stage. it was kinda funny.
