Report: NHL, NHLPA agree on salary cap

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The National Hockey League and NHL Players' Association have reportedly agreed to a salary-cap system, giving hope that the league's lengthy lockout could be nearing an end.

The Toronto Globe and Mail, citing sources close to the owners and players, revealed Wednesday that the opposing sides have worked out a cap formula that would be based on team-by team revenues.

The implementation of a salary cap has always been a polarizing issue for the two sides and is thought to be the main reason the owners and players couldn't reach an agreement before the 2004-05 season was cancelled.

However, the sources also revealed that this new development does not necessarily mean a new collective bargaining agreement is imminent. The sides would still have to come to terms on other issues such as free agency and salary arbitration.

The report stated that in the initial year of the proposed six-year plan, the salary cap would stand at around $36 million for the richest teams and about $22 million for the lowest.
