yes Tommy that is true...as a matter of fact Bone , Thugs and Harmony was mixing some of their material when I was recording in the next room...and they heard me slappin' the shit outta the bass and one of them popped in...and asked ..."what the fuck...man was that you"..he asked me if I would be availuable at all or interested...I smiled politely and declined ...told him that hip hop wasn't my thang..

A year later I put his lil' bro's head into a candy vending machine..no they didn't recognize me..well he shouldn't have called my partner a "******"...that wasn't very smart or nice...so I spanked him!

Hey Mike ...I'm buying a whole new bass rig soon...so i'll be slappin' some major wood again soon enough..

what got me started was Louis Johnson of The Brothers Johnson...there is a song called "Stomp" that I learned note for note with FEEL when I was about ninteen years old..its a real fucker to learn..

                [/ QUOTE ]

I'm also a fan of the Brothers Johnson. Lots of great basswork. "Strawberry Letter 23", "Ain't We Funkin' Now", "Stomp"...that's some great shit.

Don't forget Verdine White of Earth Wind & Fire...not as much of a slap/pop guy as Louis Johnson, but a very solid funk player.

I totally love '70s funk music--pretty much the only thing I listen to besides metal and prog rock.

                  Re: I want some FUNK

check out Jungle Funk, with Vinx, Will Calhoun & Doug Wimbish. Doug is the man!

More fusion than funk though, but still very cool

Strawberry 23...Oh man I haven't heard that in such a long time...there is some major wood slappin' in that shit!!

G Doug Wimbush is kick ...this local guy I know..Doug "Buzz" Johns...plays with him and Wooten...he gets around...

I just lost interest in the bass for so long...I advance so far and never got any better at it...well I got to where I can play the bass upside down ...laying flat on the table...I play the bass like a friggin' type writer..

I sold all my gear and concentrated on Guitar for the last eight years now..but I do bass studio work for local bands and friends here..they know who to come to..

On guitar...I'm a total balls out metal whore...all shred..

On Bass...I like fusiony , jazz , funk stuff...I hate playing metal on bass...for me it is just boring!

Even though I love funk music, my own bass playing comes straight out of the Chris Squire/Geddy Lee school. Give me a snarling Rick 4001 and an SVT, and I'll go terrorize some small animals!

I like Squire but NOT Geddy...never found him...well...good.

I learned some old Rush with my band long ago ..I always thought it was lame and boring to learn and to play..

But that is my take on it..

                            Claypool is great..

because of all my tappin'...alot of people said I sounded a lot like him..

truth is I never really listened to him...

but we probably have very similar influences..

Stanely is great....hell he's been doin his thing for years..

he's very straight forward...not much slapping and tapping...he's really good with his fingers...but I never cared for his tone much...it was always really thin and trebly..but that his sound..

I much prefer Jeff Berlin...he is amazing ..NO DOUBT!!!
