• Spin magazine... the latest dopey "list"

Got this on my Earthlink start page today. Spin is doing a feature this month of the "top albums of the past 20 years." Here's their top 10:

1. Radiohead — OK Computer
2. Nirvana — Nevermind
3. Public Enemy — It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
4. Pavement — Slanted and Enchanted
5. The Smiths — The Queen is Dead
6. Pixies — Surfer Rosa
7. De La Soul — 3 Feet High and Rising
8. Prince — Sign o' the Times
9. PJ Harvey — Rid of Me
10. N.W.A. — Straight Outta Compton

I admit I dont keep up on the latest MTV crap, or what Clear Channel sees fit to cram between the dick and fart jokes on the radio. But there's stuff on this list that I've not only not heard, I've never even heard *of*. And while I'm not a fan of Pearl Jam or U2, that's pretty much all the fuck there was on MTV in the 90's. So where are they? If you're going on most infuential, I think the Eagles' reunion album would easily take that.

Gah, I wish these idiots would knock off with the stupid lists.
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

I think Spin has been whizzing around too fast in their office chairs again.

Most of those albums have been pretty groundbreaking and influential, no matter how crap we think they are. Eagles were influential back in the day, but not really influential at all for my generation (past 20 years).

OK Computer is a brilliant album (the only ablum I like on that list). The songwriting and originality is just beyond anything else put out from the 90's until now, but that's just my opinion. I don't listen to it that much since it's not necessarily my favorite style of music, but I can definitely appreciate the genious behind it.

Appetite For Destruction should be in the top 3

A girl I knew in college went on to write for Spin & some other mags. When I first met her, she was mainly into Springsteen & mainstream rock. Then she got a job at the campus radio station & was indoctrinated into the "college rock" mindset, which dictated that stuff had to be either extremely obscure or from an unfamiliar culture to be cool or worthwhile, and placed much more value on the music sounding different or "groundbreaking" rather than on good musicianship. This is the editorial mindset at Spin. Music snobs & wannabe scenesters. Doc Martens, black-framed glasses & infrequent showers. I went through that phase myself back in the '80s & early '90s, with a bit more of a leaning toward the hardcore & metal side of things. I still love lots of obscure music & wish others would dig deeper, but that whole idea that more mainstream stuff automatically sucks is just juvenile "I'm cooler than you" bullshit.

1. Radiohead — OK Computer -
"This is where all of the boring top 40 british crap came from"
2. Nirvana — Nevermind - "Influential, not in a good way"
3. Public Enemy — It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back - "creative RAp, best on the list so far"
4. Pavement — Slanted and Enchanted "Who the hell are they?"
5. The Smiths — The Queen is Dead "Pretty damn good, depressingly good and original"
6. Pixies — Surfer Rosa "???? why do people love them?"
7. De La Soul — 3 Feet High and Rising "Huh?"
8. Prince — Sign o' the Times "Prince is a genius, hasn't shown it in years but OK"
9. PJ Harvey — Rid of Me "Whatever, give me a break"
10. N.W.A. — Straight Outta Compton "Oh hell yeah!!!, if you like gangsta rap, this is it"

I have to say, this list is for sheltered ivy leaguers, there is SO much not in here. Like ROCK???!!??

There is a song by Lagwagon about people like these : Know it all.... damn fine example of Punk too!

know it all

Look at the world in disbelief You used to follow
- now you lead College has enlightened you And
you are proud to be different And like different bands
- different types You ain't nobody's fool It's like certain
bands remind you of someone you hated 'Cause they
didn't wear the right clothing And there's only one true
fashion Alot of the bands on the college charts are
great bands until they get signed. Then you hate
them It's such bullshit - you used to love them you
hypocrite I remember you and I listening to bands
that we liked Only the songs mattered to you But now
you're a D.J. and preaching that hype "Corporate Rock Sucks"
"You know, college radio enlightens you"
It's supposed to serve as a means to expose new bands
without prejudice, but it makes no sense Safe harbor
for the underground 'Til the alternative becomes the popularsound
The bands are good 'til they make enough cash
to eat food and get a pad Then they're sold out
and their music is cliché Because talent's exclusive to bandswithout pay
Know it all - Did you really listen to that song?
Could you ever write what you call wrong?

Off Topic- I just Googled for that girl I knew in college & got over 600 hits! She resigned from Us Magazine after Jann Wenner pulled her bad reviews for Don Henley & Paul Simon albums. She now writes for Newsweek & the NY Times on all sorts of topics & has basically had a kickass career & traveled the globe. She even did a Slayer piece! Re: Spin magazine... the latest dopey \"list\"

So, we are reaching back to 1985 for this list?

And there is no "Appetite for Destruction" on the list? Hell, what about Metallica's Black Album. That album was huge and groundbreaking in that it essentially took Metallica mainstream.....

Where is "10" by Pearl Jam? Or hell, where is "Dirt" from Alice in Chains?

I don't even know who PJ Harvey is. The Pixies? OK, sure. Who is Pavement? Even thinking with their mindset...there should be a Cure record on here.

This "list" is an atrocity.

Well I can see where they are coming from on the list...

Like Rap or Not N.W.A. was the foundation for Gangsta Rap (which is finally dying) but they were the start of it

Public Enemy were the most political and intelligent of the Rappers at the time

The Pixies - If not for the Pixies many of the uber popular bands like Weezer would not be around

Nevermind - It goes down as a classic but man this thing has the wrong rap as the album that changed music. The media was just looking for something push but regardless this is what it is and will be known for historically.

Prince - As Tommy Said wrong album

Radiohead - OK Computer - Another "benchmark" album for whatever reason. I like Radiohead and own every disc and have seen them a few times and I hate nothing more than people who slober all over OK Computer. The Bends is a better album but oh well.

The did nail influential bands though, maybe these bands were not the most popular but these bands inspired the most popular bands ie NWA = Tupac....

Actually PJ had pretty good airplay here in the 90's better than the Pixies but I have no idea why she is on there... Maybe it is because she is horribly ugly and went out with Steve Albini?

Pavement pretty influental on the college rock scene... never got into them but they were a big college rock band.

The Cure (I love the Cure) Was more "influential" in the late 70's and early 80's. Disentigration is in range but I don't think that was as "cutting edge" as Pornography, Boys Don't Cry or Head on the Door.

Mind you I don't really agree with any of these choices but I can see where they are coming from to an extent

One thing that is glaringly left off all these lists is Anthrax. They never get the credit for bringing the Nu-Metal plauge upon us.

I don't know. I guess they were going for obscura type stuff.

It just seems lacking to me. What about Beck, Ministry...Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction? Hell, what about some of the heavier chick rock like Hole or Varuca Salt...or even L7 or the Non-Blondes? No REM record on there? I don't expect to see a Dokken album on there or the such...but I think the list is hurting. They don't even touch on the jam band phenomenon...Phish, Dave Matthews...fuck, look at the all the records Hootie sold!!!
