Re: Anyone know anything about autism?

    Zeeg,
My nephew is autistic. I can set you up with some contacts if you like. Autism has gained SO much ground over the last few years and there are some really wonderful stories. Zach was diagnosed when he was about 4. He's now 14. One of the coolest, grooviest cats i know. Please pm me and i'll set you up with some info, or if you just want some insight.

My ex's nephew was diagnosed with Aspergers, and like in the case of Sully's cousin, is crazy intellegent but has the social skills of a 3 year old (he's now 13). The new Rolling Stone has an article linking Autism and Asperger's (among other mental disabilities in children) to mercury-based vaccines.
And this epidemic is still on the rise, because the government supposedly turns a blind eye to it. They will not allow a parent of an Autistic or Aspeger child to sue the pharmaceutical companies for this.
I often wondered if my son (who is now 13) has some degree of Aspergers. He is intellegent, but is very "young" with socialization...and has many signs of a typical Asperger person. He's got a really bad case of ADHD, which is now somewhat under control with meds.

I also talked to my wife about getting a second opinion, but it turns out our pediatrician is extremely experienced with autism and AS, and is usually very reluctant to make rash diagnoses.

Most likely your pediatrician is a general practitioner. Although he/she may be well experienced with autism, they are not likely to be an EXPERT in it. I'd strongly recommend getting that second opinion and, thereafter, a referral to a specialist.

I've heard too many stories of kids getting inappropriately misdiagnosed. Both directions I mean. Kids who should have been diagnosed with it weren't AND vice versa.

I'm not saying that your doctor isn't right. I'm just saying that, for yours' and your kid's sake, it is better to be safe than sorry. The best way to handle that is getting a consensus from several docs, and specialist attention.

BTW, my brother-in-law (now 40-ish) has Aspergers. Although most docs thought he was somewhat autistic, he was probably diagnosed with that only 5 years ago. And, over the years before that, he must've been through 5 different GPs and 10 different specialists in different types of autism before he was properly diagnosed.

I agree Shreddermon. With anything its always better to have a second opinion.
