The free stuff sounds great but what about updates for new viruses?

        Re: The best anti-virus software-opinions

it allows for updates.. I think it was at least every couple weeks or something to that effect.
Avast looks like a very good program also..I may try that on my other system running 98se.

Don't get me wrong..I'm willing to pay for the best protection I think is the best bang for the buck. Norton does offer good protection, it is just a system resource sucker that I do not care to have. If AVG and Zone Alarm prove themselves... then I'll consider past the free to the trial, and then to purchase if I think it's worth the 30.00.
The best plan will get my money.

"good & cheap protection to put your PC behind a router"

that actually sounds like a good idea, I was getting alot of hits on my pc per day after I downloaded Limewire even with the firewall locked. I don't think I will do that again. (download Lime)

You can have the free edition of AVG update daily. I'm sure it's the same for Avast as well.

yeah, it's built into the program that you can check for updates much like other software like Adware or Spybot.

              Re: The best anti-virus software-opinions

Symantec AntiVirus is what we use at work and also with all our clients on their servers. But I don't think you can purchase it for individual / non-business use. Most of the anti-virus stuff out there is laughable.

If you keep your version of Windows Updated constantly (check at least once a week and download the critical / recommended updates) and you stay off of "bad" webpages and you use discretion when downloading you should be good.

The CompSci guys in the crowd might have a different opinion on this but I think it's also good & cheap protection to put your PC behind a router. I run a cheapie LynkSys router with ZoneAlarm on my PC and after installing the router the external hits on my PC dropped from a few hundred/day to zero. The script kiddies don't even seem to be hitting the firewall anymore.

Zone alarm, if you still have the preference for messages to pop up. They also have an upgrade where you can track the source of where your hits are coming from. I believe it also has virus protection.

"use discretion when downloading and stay off the bad websites" -very good advice that sometimes gets taken for granted.
If you have media player set to play anything that comes into it, you can leave yourself open to attack. Believe me, what may be seemingly innocuous can have a Trojan hiding in it.

AVG hasn't failed me yet. I've been using it for about 4 years now I think. Zone Alarm for firewall purposes.
