I thought the song was waaay bad (and in the bad way, not the bad means good way).
The reasons why it blows
- Dwells on riffs longer than Dawn does but without the ability to hold interest
- Boring psuedo-technical psuedo-Meshuggah wanna-be-current Dream Theater riffing
- Terrible singing on Mikael's part
- Generic death metal sections
- The songs from Damnation / Deliverence were more exciting

The reasons why its good
- Keyboards / synths are excellent
- Lots of feeling in the song

I honestly expected something completely different (and I expected it to be not very good) but this somehow was not what I expected at all.

Sorry to say, I disagree on all those points. Just because they play notes on upbeats and leave some space every now and then doesn't make it a Messhugah rip off. It's not really that technical at all, its just syncopation, and its something they've done in the past, but not as heavily as on this...they are a "prog band" So, I think that gives them a right to play with time a little bit, it adds tension.

The singing I believe will fit perfectly into the context of the rest of the album. It is supposed to be a concept album dealing with the occult. The lyrics are pretty straightforward and satanic on this track. Mike did an excellent job of making his clean vocals sound quite evil IMHO.

The keyboard parts are frikken amazing...there is just a ton of ambience going on..plus the melodic outline of the guitar part is just great.

Its just about everything I could hope for.

there's another higher quality rip. THe compression noises are pretty much gone..and its a bit louder.

I didn't say they were ripping off Meshuggah. Lots of metal folks in my area that I talk to hear the syncopated rhythms and then go "WHOA THAT'S TECHNICAL.. LIKE MESHUGGAH!" I actually posted that on a local scene forum and copy/pasted it on here.

This new rip sounds a little bit better, but there is this weird, low quality sounding mp3 watery / wishy washy sound especially with the cymbals. I can't describe it... I hear it in sub 128 encoded mp3s.

I understand that they're a "prog band" and they can do things off the norm, but that doesn't mean I have to like it simply because they're a prog band. It all falls back to interest, and this song doesn't interest me. There isn't anything that catches my ear or draws my attention other than the section at around 6:00 (which actually kind of reminds me of Tool, I don't know why). When I listened to the mp3 I looked at the timer in my player twice before I finally got to the solo because I just wasn't interested.

Also, its somewhat ironic that we butt heads again. :cheers:

the quality is bad because it was recorded off a sirius radio station which was already only streamign at 128, the guy recorded it at 320....so he wouldn't lose anything else. But yeah the cymbals don't sound so good, but its just how the file was made is all.

Yeah! Exactly. I think the guy who captured it did something to the file (perhaps intentionally???) to lower the 'quality' of the sound.

I feel quite the opposite. I think they peaked at Still Life and only marginally liked BWP. Deliverance didn't do anything for me. Damnation was a quaint change, but not really my thing and it dissappeared from my playlist rather quickly.
