Re: Looking for some good Death Metal without.....

Coroner is just kicking my ass!!! Cynic is kick ass too and i am digging them. Having a hard time finding samples of Atrox and Control Denied. I don't want to buy the CD without hearing a sample of it first. Thanks for all the recomendations.....keep em coming.-Lou

PS.....while musically COB tears it up.......I get put of by the vox.

Control Denied is Chuck Schuldiner's side project, not as 'death' as Death, it's very musically tasteful. I think you'd like it.

Here's a place with a bunch of 30 second clips:

Atrox is metal with a female doing clean vox.

You into Forbidden at all? I'd suggest any of their albums, but Twisted Into Form, Forbidden Evil and Distortion are great albums. Very heavy with clean vocals and ripping guitar.

Control Denied is killer too. Not so sure about Atrox...never was much into female vox. ( Ducks )-Lou

lol. I really dig opera metal, but it's definitely an aquired taste.

Check out Forbidden. Sorta the same genre as Control Denied. Very ripping guitars and catchy rythms...

Actually, if you want REAL death metal with vocals you can understand, check out Angelcorpse!! They LAY WASTE to all bands mentioned above!!

Wrong. Cynic is the bestest band ever, therefore even if I haven't listened to Angelcorpse before that statement is simply WRONG!

Re: Looking for some good Death Metal without.....

Angel Corpse is good band, but I don't really consider their vocals understandable, they're just not a low growl. They're not technically better than any of the bands I listed, but they are real death metal...

Therion is really good, but it's more of an aquired taste with the sometimes female vox and the keyboards, IMO.

I disagree with Cynic being the best band ever though.

Re: Looking for some good Death Metal without.....

Someone mentioned Therion but they haven't been death in a long time. Occasionally they sound somewhat death (though their death metalish cover of Metallica "Fight Fire With Fire" rocks hardcore). I'd suggest Israeli Progressive Death metal band Orphaned Land. Its an acquired taste on some songs. They like to use both clean and death vocals (and as death vocals go they are pretty light). They also like to use traditional middle eastern passages mixed in with some really crushing riffs but it works really well IMO. Not many bands out there that have a similar sound to them. They are playing at ProgPower this year.

Speaking of Progressive Death, Opeth is another death band that uses alot of clean vocals. Songs like Drapery Falls, Fair Judgement have that death/doom lyrical content and sound without the cookie monster gurgles.

Thanks for that Coroner recommendation. Awesome stuff.

Nevermore's new cd is incredibly good from what I've heard so far (2 tracks). Very very heavy and fast.

Those of you who can deal with cookie vocals definitely should check out a band called Demonoid. They had the best thrash/death cd of last year in my opinion. Just amazing stuff.

Lou ...my bro..

I need to turn you on to this world of darkness and pain..

what got me into the "hard" stuff was CORONER...Century Media has all of them in stock...the last one they put out was over ten years ago...but Coroner is timeless ..In my metal opinion..

Start with Coroner..."No more color" and "Mental Vortex"...my two faves...especially the latter..

stay away from Ace's picks...he's already all fucked up with the hard stuff..he will scare you away before you even have a chance..

we will talk more..I would strongly advise you to explore the progressive death realm...Cynic / Martyr / Gory Blister / Nocturnus / Symbyosis* / Arsis / The Alarum / Sceptic / Theory in Practice..so many more ...but these are a great start!

I say this because this music is truly amazing and the harshness of the vocals do NOT overwhelm the listener...like alot of death vox do..

hmm.. i like Sceptic.. and i really dont like death metal.
i got unbeliever's scrypt, pathethic being and blind existence.

i really hate that low gurgling, but sceptic combines it quite good with some a bit more 'normal' lyrics. with guitar work that's heavy as fuck
