Re: music influences

My main influences are...

Opeth, Katatonia, Anathema, In Flames, Soilwork, Nevermore, My Dying Bride, STrapping Young Lad, Megadeth, Metallica, Immortal, Emperor and Dimmu Borgir.

And my classical background influences alot of the harmonies and what not that we use. (a little counterpoint here and there...weird proggy stuff)

We're arranging Gustav Holst's "the Planets" right now. Just got started on "Jupiter- Bringer of Jollity" and it's coming along quite well (what I've heard of it so far on powertabs) (fellow guitarist Willman has been taking charge of that project)

so yeah, I'm a noob that just found this board, just curious what you guys are listening to or were influenced by musically. because I'm a metalhead who has been exposed to a wide variety of new music lately and it's all killer.

and I like to check out new shit I have not yet heard, to broaden my horizons.

I'm 40 so we're talking UFO, MSG, Iron Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, Scorpions, VH, Rush, Led Zep and all that classic 70's and early 80's hard rock and metal, pre-hair bands.

then of course Dokken, Ratt, Queensryche - the good 80's metal bands.

right now my two favorite bands are Jane's Addiction and Foo Fighters. also Alice in Chains, they are so heavy.

I got introduced to a lot of great alt music on a Jane's postbored, and downloaded a shitload until the lawsuits started flying.

right now I really like

Filter (alternative metal, very heavy, melodic)
NIN (everyone knows their deal, I like some of it)
Massive Attack (intense electronic trippy shit, very cool chill music)
311 (jazz/hiphop/rock/ska/punk/rap outfit, their guitarist Tim Mahoney is insane, he can do it ALL)
Porno for Pyros (Perry's post Jane's band with Peter Distefano on guitar)
The Secret Machines (new killer power trio, and upbeat stuff too)
and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (another trio, sick dirge like hypnotic songs, lots of guitar)

I'm always looking for cool new bands and music to check out!

I'm 43 and I am right with ya regarding your influences bro. The song that inspired me to even pick up a guitar originally is 25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago. That guitar solo changed my life. Welcome to the board.

Re: music influences

My musical inspirations and influences are as follows:

Pussy , tits , ass , BJs , Boinkin' , shooting people , beatin' people , hating people , Satan , fast cars , eating alot , pooping alot , politics , religion , taking lots of drugs..smokin' lots of weed , awesome amps and geetars , bad ass tone , my family and friends , my enemies , and most important money..lots and lots of money!!

I need "music" that is the soundtrack to all THAT...and that would be METAL!!!

wayyyyy too much metal to list for me...so I summed it up this way...it's much easier.

as far as new metal to check out...I was doing a COMPLETE Metal list everything from A thu Z...but it was way too much effort for so little feedback...so I gave up!

here's the funny thing about influences...everything you hear influenses you...don't like c.c. deville?...that influences you to NOT play that way...just search around and listen to everything...including nature...there are many musical sounds in nature if you just listen...d.m.

i liked that one Filter album alot. it was their second one i think. and not because of the "take a picture song", but because some of it rocked.

yeah, me too, that's my fave, it's called Title of Record. there's some sick shit on that cd for sure. I like the singles too, but the other heavy stuff is best.

I used to be into the heavey stuff but now I like Jazz. Shredding is something I couldnt live with out, but I've put it off to the side right now because guys like Bill Connors, John Scofield, and Holdsworth have my ear at the momment.

I think you brought up a great point, DM!

Went out and bought a guitar after listening to Vulgar Display of Power.. think I was 10 years old at the time. EVH and Kirk Hammett were a big influence on me back then too. Right now I'd have to go with Marty Friedman and Al Dimeola, been listening to their stuff quite a bit lately.

Hopesfall, Ten Missing Days, A Closing Skyline, and Cambridge are all my buddies. Check them out
www.purevolume.com/hopesfall
www.myspace.com/tenmissingdays

www.myspace.com/cambridge
A Closing Skyline's first full length was their best cd I think, they've shifted members a lot and their new stuff is not as original or genuine as their old stuff I don't think. Hopesfall's style has changed a lot over the years too but I like everything they've put out, but I think The Satellite Years is their pinnacle so far, along with the No Wings to Speak of ep. From Autumn to Ashes had one really good album and one really weak album and I think they're coming out with a new one soon-get their first album (Too Bad You're Beautiful). Most of Thrice's stuff is good, I think you can go to their website and check them out. Someone on the board posted a thread about some Opeth MP3s that you can download, so I'd do that too, or go buy some of their full lengths. Murder by Death is a band that I recently got into, they're a very experimental rock band with a piano player and a cello player.
