• Dell or Mac?!

Hi guys,
seems like my IT tech is unable to fix my HP latop . Therefore, i'd have to get a new one soon for academic use (Bloody Uni requires laptop)

Here are the two choices I have.

12" IBook-$899 (1 year warranty) need to top up 189 for 3 years warranty.

14" Latitude D510 Notebook-$1,369(3 years warranty)

Btw, I'm a business major, therefore, i'll be using it mostly for word, excel, & etc...

URL for IBook- Ibook

Url for Dell - Dell

All inputs greatly appreciated
Thanks
Fong

personally, i'd go with the mac, but that's me. and don't worry about ms office, you can get it on a mac. you can also get a 14" ibook for 1299, why opt for the smaller size? no matter what you get though, be sure to get the extended warranties; lappys can get beaten on a little easier. nice to have the coverage.

I'd go with Dell. I own four of them and haven't had a problem with any of them. My opinion.

I know Dells are pretty reliable for their desktops. Are the laptops as good?

Re: Dell or Mac?!

I will never buy Dell again. I'm dependent on my computer's uptime for my living, so it's imperative that I can get hold of replacement parts quickly in case they go down. Dell uses a lot propriety parts in their boxes, which means that I have to order replacements parts with them. I can't just run down to the computer store on the corner and get parts.

A few months ago, the PSU in one of my Dells burnt out. If they had used a standard component, I would have had it up and running again in three hours - but now I had to order it. Not only that - since the warranty had run out the month before, I had to pay it in advance - and THEN it turned out that they didn't even have this part in stock, SO I HAD TO WAIT WHILE THEY MANUFACTURED IT. It took A MONTH before the PSU turned up on my doorstep, and that was after I had bought another computer to cover for the Dell.

Needless to say, I wrote them a long letter telling them to go fuck themselves.

I have a 12" iBook and like it quite a bit. Personally I like my laptop to be small so I went for this over a 14 or 15" monster.

Unless you absolutely have to run some software that doesn't run on a mac, the mac is the way to go. Also, IMO, better to get a thinkpad than a dell.

Yeah, I have 2 laptops. The only problem I seen with them, is a recall of their AC adapter.

I take a Dell with me when I travel and it's been consistently good.

Bert mentioned possibly a ThinkPad too. The ThinkPad, out of all the computers I've owned, was a workhorse and a great laptop.

If you are dependant on your uptime as you mentioned, the Thinkpad is hands down the best laptop for durablilty. I have had 3 and you just can't kill em. For sure check them out before you commit. I use my Thinkpad for all my "business" and i have a Vaio for my personal, which are also AMAZING machines but not as durable as the IBM.

Thinkpad are nice but they have so many choices! Just going thru the IBM website gives me a headache... And would the "new" IBM (belongs to a China company now) be any different from the past?

I'm a Mac guy so I say go with a Mac. Fill it up with RAM, but don't buy Apple's RAM. 3rd party RAM is cheaper.

Try calling any big company support line nowadays. They are all like that.

Fong - I would buy the Dell.

As for software, don't buy anything until you talk to me.
