Well I'm a "metal retard" I don't like "cookie monster" vocals at all, so what? Yes, I know I miss out on some pretty good guitar work but I can't get past the vocals...if thats what they are called, they are almost comical and require zero musical talent.

I guess I never really was metal afterall, thanks for pointing that out Bill...I'll go now and listen to some poser metal wannabes like Iron Maiden, Dio, Judas Priest or Black Sabbath -- since they have a vocalist who can actually carry a vocal melody and you can understand what they are saying most of the time [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

I don't see any prejudices in not getting into cookie monster bands, I don't think that is the appropriate word, its more of personal musical taste thing. I'm not the "man" holding Mr. Cookie monster down and not letting him get gigs and recording contracts then maybe it would apply. I wish they would release those albums with the option to not get the vocals for us "metal retards" to at least get into the guitar, bass and drums from some good musicians.

Wow, great idea. They should have options to have different vocal tracks on stuff. Yours choice, Cookie Monster, Dragon Humper, No Vocals at all... Etc...

Let me make this clear...as in my original post I do not like "cookie monster" vocals...seriously..I hate that stuff...it's gay.

I will flame those who sound like a "cookie monster"...lets think of who really sounds like a cooki monster...Max Cavalera..he sounds just like a cookie monster..Oh , that tool Chris Barnes of Six Feet Under....gimme COOKIE!!!!

I hated Deiced because I Glen Benton Cookie Monster vox...until I listened to the complexity og the music...once I saw how demanding the music actually was with bands like Morbid Angel , Cannibal Corpse , Hate Eternal for example...it was a "diffrent" language to me ...I didn't know how to play that stuff on my guitar...not at all...I was too busy trying to sound like all my 80's heros..Lynch , DiMartini , Cody , Steve Stevens...who are all great and have their own voice but it was very similiar in style and structure...it was .."safe" for me to like it...it was comfortable like a well worn broken in shoe..

I will equate this to when I first started to play bass...when I picked up bass back in 1978..I wanted to learn all my faves..Van Halen , Black Sabbath , Priest , ...well you know....and that's all I ever played..

one day I walked into a music store and saw this fat black dude ...slappin' the shit out of the bass..it was a whole diffrent language that I didn't understand...I didn't know how to play that stuff...and it was quite impressive to say the least...this was the same time I saw King Crimson on the Dicipline tour and saw Levin tappin' on that Chapman stick...hell what the hell was that thing..I dunno...but it was quite imprssive...so much I devoted two decades mastering that whole schtick...the slapping the tapping ..all of it..

but in doing so I bought a crapload of Funk and Jazz fusion albums and wooshedded like a muther to get that crap down..

Death metal was like the same thing to me..there was a time when I wrote it off as noise...just crap...I only loved those singers that could .."sing"..

I hated Kind Diamond when he came out...I just couldn't take his fucking voice..I thought it was sooo fuckking ridiclous..but that music...that guitar playing..it was just wayyy too fucking good to deny...so I listened..and the more I listened ...I got it...it was like a lightbulb over my head kinda shit..it's a package deal...King wrote all that shit...and that shit ..wasn't shit afterall..it was a brillaint as ANY Edgar Allan Poe , HP Lovecraft , or Steving King story...the stories and all his voices suddenly had meaning...and then it all made sense..it was the big picture intead of dissection individual parts..

Todat I can NOT believe I didn't like King Diamond...in hindsight it felt I missed on a great deal when it came out..because of MY ignorance...and quick judgement..

Coroner...same damn thing...That has to be one of the BEST metal bands of ALL time..when it was out and I heard the bash beats...the harsh vocals..it sounded like shit to me..

Then years later..I rediscovered them..and man was I fucking wrong...The singer is ONE hell of a bassist , TT baron is probably one of the best metal guitarist of all time..and the drummer smoked..the music smoked..I could no longer deny it..I couldn't belive all that was coming from three guys..

well I guess Metal is like a drug...once you try it...see what it's abpout and like it..and you do it all the time..it loses it's impact...so you take up a notch..

I guess that is what I did...BUT by doing so it opened a world to some of the BEST players in the biz...the drummers to those bands are amoung the best..as the rest of the musicians..B;lack metal and death metal players...the real good ones can do any metal ther is...take the guy everyone seems to know here..Gus G..well we all knew himn as some neo classical yngwie like dragon humper...especially with his way too tongue in cheek ..almost spinal tappish Dream Evil..it was actually too "tongue and cheek" for him...he wanted to be taken seriously...hard to do that in a dragon humping unit..

so he did several projects including Nightrage..which is as far as he could get from powermetal..or he tried to ..probably for this reason..and with a Swedish death meatl lengeng Tom Linberg...the voice of At The Gates..one of the pioneers of Swedish Thrash...there would be NO Lamb Of God , No Arch Enemy withouth the likes of At The Gates , Dark Tranquility or Entombed...probably.

There IS good and BAD in ALL metal...in ALL metal...so lumping all death meatl and black metal with this "no talent" stereo typing ...well I must defend it..

because you can...well I can sereotype all metal styles..and lump power metal with dragon humping...that would be wrong..not all power metal is that...

same goes with death metal...yeah there is a lot of SHIT death metal..but for every one that sucks there is probably one that smokes...it's an art...an art that shouldn't be denied because it is an art that has been around for a very long time and has much to offer...if you let it..

there is room for all genres of metal...true metal..there are death metal and black metal bands that are just as proficient in writing and skill as Dream Theater , Vanden Plas , At Vance , or whatever guitar shredder you prefer that floats your boat...there is black and death metal guitarist that could wipe the floor with guys such as John Petrucci or at least hang with him on his best day...and that is saying alot..

Take Dream Theater for a moment..awesome players...truly gifted..but alot of their music iss lesser than the some of it's parts...to me DM is not about the music at times..it's an obvious wankfest..and Labrie is one annoying ass , nasisliy singer that grates on my nerves like a chalk board...but I di support , own all of their stuff..

that is what I'm saying...support metal...especially good metal..true metal.

Much like Mr. Lutz, I'm a "Metal Retard" I'll take Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, etc... Any day. I saw Judas a couple of weeks ago and they were great. I never realized how good a guitarist Glenn Tipton was... then again I stopped listening after Turbo. If I ever get my ass in gear tonight, I'm gonna go see an Ozzy tribute band. Should be interesting.

Then again, I do like Shadows Fall and Iced Earth too.

Until I was in an original band I was one of those guys that would criticize bands. Now I know how hard it is to write a song, then perform it well in front of an audience. The musician thing is not easy. Props to all of 'em.
