There's a lot of hatered towards Enuff Z'Nuff and Pretty Boy Floyd too, anyone who hates on them sucks

Poor Shawn...dude I love ya man..
You shred dude...so you're doin' somethin' right..though I try to expand the horizons a little bit for some..
I was there just like you guys...ask John...we go back that long..
all me and John listened to was all the big stuff like The Scorps , Van Halen , Black Sabbath , Metallica (when they were cool) , Ozzy , Megadeth ..
My favorite stuff in the world was Dokken , Rough Cutt , Ratt , Shotgun Messiah , Racer X , The Scream , TNT , Black N Blue , Accept , Autograph , Queensryche and even the first Enuff Z Nuff album due to Derick Frigo...because I liked him in Lemans..
I never bought into that fluff though that Scott likes..Pretty Boy Floyd...Poison...that stuff was way to happy for me way back then ...even when I was more normal..
I thought they were cheap imitiations of Crue..I mean I'
d rather listen to Crue and by that time I thought Crue was getting a little lame for my taste..
anything with shred..I loved it..Vinnie Vincent invasion , even Nitro..the vocals on THAT were horrible but I love Batio..
I have ALL the guitar recordings and Shrapnel stuff...I'm not missing a single one..I have stuff that people totally forgot about..like Guy Man Dude..and Mark Wood and his electric shred Violins
Like I said...I think there is "something" in all genres to be learned..and if you don't like Angela's voice in Arch Enemy for example...fuck her in the ass...listen to those solos and riffs..total kicks ass..you could learn alot from that stuff...It inspires me till no end..
and if you don't like Warrel from Nevernore...fuck him in his ass..Jeff Loomis is the best and coolest metal shredder today...anyone could learn from him..and I mean anyone..
I LOVE guitar and if the best guiatrsist happens to have a shit singer...oh well...I think John knows all about that..well then so be it..
I hated Martin of Racer X when they first came out ...I thought he was a tone deaf fuckstick...I hated his voive...but I like Gilbert...so I endured the vox..
think how many bands with great guiatrists have shitty singers....hell Dokken and Pearcy wasn't jems in my book..but the songs were cool and the guitars were awesome..
look at bands like Vinnie Vincent , Nitro , Shotgun Messiah , Steeler , Keel , and countless other bands that the singers kinda sucked but there was shred..
well same principle here I guess.
and being a guitaris I don't really listen to the lyrics and shit anyways..if the guiatrist smoke and his tone is killer and the music is tight...they could sing about Jesus , the devil , your momma , my momma...I don't give a shit...
I just got the new Candlemass...I love it...original line up...and whatnot..
the first song is KILLER...Messiah sounds as strong as ever...but it's called "THE BLACK DWARF"...that he says about 2004 times in the song...so now everytime I hear it...I think of Gary Coleman...so what the fuck are you gonna do...

Like my wife..four years ago she thought Pantera was way too harsh...and that was a comprimise on my part...putting something as "tame" as Pantera on to make her happy in the car...so I can be happy...well she wanted no part of it..
now I can't get Pantera out of her car ...she plays that and Exodus every single day...I like Pantera and Exodus...but not every single day..

Ya know... Jeri and I were just talking about this not too long ago (she's a real trip on the phone, btw! )
We were talking about how our metal tastes evolved and how if you're not used to harsher vocals or thrashier styles you kinda have to get used to it at first. If that makes any sense.
Much like diving into an icy river. Yeooowww!
I didn't jump right into the pit at first, I had to come to appreciate bands like Nevermore & Lamb of God & Morbid Angel for example. Morbid Angel has an absolutely gorgeous acoustic fingerpicked song called "Desolate Ways" that I never would have heard had I not checked them out. That song is now one of my favorite warm-ups to play!
To me; having been trained as a vocalist these harsh throat destroying vox goes against everything I had been taught as being musical, and it sounded ridiculous at first. Much of it still does. But the angst and the rawness of emotion I appreciate very much and it makes sense to me now from an artistic point of view. Or else I am just numb to it.
Shawn makes a great point though... no matter what, I still can't bring myself to listen to country. No matter how awesome the chikin' pikin'!!
that Morbid Angel example and tune is great...nice warm up..
and yes I cam't listen to country either...I hate it...even though there is some serious players in that scene..but I can't get past the "hillbilly " vocals..
just like rap I guess..I guess Country sounds like white trash to me...white man's ebonics...I hear that country accent and I instantly think...tool...not the band.
Funny English people sound smart to me...they could be a freakin' Jerryy's kid born without half a brain but if they speak with a English accent ..they sound intelligent to me.
I guess that is judging or stereotyping...ehhh so what..who cares...what the shit..
and about this whole new wave of American metal...I think it started off OK..Lamb Of God , Himsa , Killswitch...but it just watered down and cookie cutter..with that emo-core..whine and scream bullshit...I like LOG , Himsa , Killwitch seemed to sell out though..or were alredy..well they fall into that scream then sing like shit mode to me...I mean fucking really.."Fo Comfort...Fo Solace"...I want to punch that fag in the mouth when I hear that fuckin' shit..and he looks like an asshole to me anyways..singing like some kind of broken hearted tool...that's gay..not metal
But NO matter how watered down and cooki cutter this New American Swill will become..at least white kids have someting they could identify with again...instead of spreading the ebonic plague thru the suburbs..
I belive you should keep ebonics where it came from...it sounds retarded..not funny ...not cute...no matter how hard the WB network tries to push it..it's stupid and I'm not buying it.
well I can;'t identify with it because I was never a blck guy...
whenever I see a wigbot..I go to that misguided fuckwad.. and wisper...hey homeslice...you're white...deal with it.
Its my way of saying...hey you're stupid...stop it!

Derick Frigo was on a Mike Varney comp called unsong heroes..I have all of them..
well he and others like Shawn Lane used to send these solos and songs to Varney and he would compile the coolest ones...Frigo had a solo called "Haunted House"...or was that Lane's..I forgot..but it smoked...that is why I bought Lemans in 1985...then the first Nuff album..after that they just got more and more "fluffy" for me...but they did have hooks and they're own unique style..very Beatlesque and whatnot..
then Frigo left...then he came back...that I remember..

you know I had a partner named Damien , and this one old dude still calls me Damien...it's been years now...I haven't the heart to tell him my real name...not after 8 years or so..
AK47 talk about sheep mentality...I loved that old South Park episode where all the cows were commiting mass suicide..in the same manner..awesome!!

You shouldn't have to listen to and enjoy anything you don't want to listen to and enjoy. A lot of people that listen to metal are picky, hell, people that listen to any genre of music are picky. I've spoken to plenty of people who play different music and listen to different music but there are always people that write of genres as a whole. Not to say that it is a bad thing, but they are really dismissing a lot of good music. I try to obide by a "case by case" judgement of every band. There are plenty of death metal bands that I like, and plenty of ones that I dislike. The same goes for every other genre or subgenre of music.
In defense of death metal vocals... The growling vocals are an acquired taste, just like any other style of music. Here's a quote from the lead vocalist of a local band called "Vulgarizer"
[ QUOTE ]
As much as square dancing would be inappropriate to Death Metal, so would certain vocal stylings. The growling (or insert-adjective-here) vocals are something that, I think, matches the quality of the music. The fact that they are indiscernible is of no consequence. Do you hold the same objection of "can't understand what they say" to Opera? To Tibetan throat singing? To any music sung in a foreign tongue? [...] Fact is, vocals are an instrument as much as any other part of a musical [composition].
[/ QUOTE ]
(slightly changed for clarity)
When Jimi Hendrix started wailing away on his guitar and producing those extreme sounds, tons of people were running for the hills. It is the same thing when people started experimenting with distortion on their guitars. Growling vocals are just a more extreme / distorted version of the voice. If you like it, that's cool. If you don't, then that's cool too.
People were doing the same thing as a lot of folks do right now with the death metal vocals to the 80's metal / glam metal / whatever its called metal, they saw the guys on stage that had the permed hair, makeup, high pitched singing, killer guitar solos, all that stuff and just wrote it off as trash. We're all doing the same thing with nu metal too, but if everyone just took the music for what it was and gave it a chance, instead of bulking everything together, then you're good to go.
I always said ..Halford wouldn't be right for Cradle of Filth and Dani Filth wouldn't be right for Priest..or you can plug in whatever examples you want ..
agressive music needs agressive vocals..it's a package deal.
BTW..someone said here that there is two kinds of metal ..good metal and bad metal...
That's a fact!
BTW...I love Hammerfal but can't stand Jocaim Cans..why...because I think if you're a "power metal" singer...that should require to have some "power" in your voice...he has none...he makes Don Dokken sound like Chuck Billy!
but yet..NOBODY says he blows..because it's not "cookie monster" shit!
