those guys you mentioned Bill show off their double bass skills mostly.
simple 16th note double bass wanking is by far the easyest thing in drumming. You need just some physical training. There is nothing complex about it. Just a fast steady beat.
It starts to annoy when the drummer only plays fast with kick drums, it is just like guitar tremolo picking on one note.
Drummer has to use his HANDS too. Combaining different beats together with all the toms, snare and cymbals is just like playing a cool guitar solo. Most of the metal drummers who has a fast dobule kick technique can't do jackshit with their hands. They hit with their full arms, no wrist job at all.
Those guys you metntioned Bill, can use their hands too, but they don't impress me. There are soo much better drummers.
ALL the great players have a very good wrist technique, ALL of them. You can't play fast paradidels on hi-hat if you hit them with full arms. You need a good wrist technique.
Jazz, fusion, latin music (samba, bossa-nova), prog etc. are 1000 times more difficult then metal when it comes to drumming. I know. I have some really good freinds who are amazing drummers and can play almost EVERYTHING.
All that music is based on wrist technique on drums. And there are so many complex rhythms there. Some latin beats are when you play 4 TOTALY different rhythms together.

There are so few really heavy metal drummers that impress me, Lombardo, Haake ore even Vinnie Paul because he is cool.
But rest of them are booring. My good friend who I played in a band last year can kick their holy asses anytime. And that's because he is learned fusion drumming a lot.

About Nu metal bass players, there is a one REALLY insane guy. Ryan from Mudvayne. He is influnced of Stu Hamm, John Patitucci etc. This guy CAN SHRED. I've heard it. Fast as Billy Sheehan or Victor Wooten.

Oh is that all it is dude...hell I didn't know it was that simple..hell , I should just do it then..

Funny John and I have been looking for a THAT drummer for 20 years that fits that description , but all the drummers around here must be above that playing level...because double kickin' retards don't exist in Cleveland..

My ten year old son is turning out to be a drum monster..I should tell him not to waste his time building his meter , speed and endurance..nahhhhhhh just join a Nu metal band...that's where all the pussy is..

Drumming isn't simple I haven't said that. Drumming is the most difficult instrument. Double Bass is a good thing to know, but it is just soo over-rated and over used technique. It doesn't fit everywhere. And yes even the old-school drummers can do it very well. Do you know Steve Gadd, he is a legend among the drummers. Very old dude, plays jazz and fusion mostly, he also played with Al Di Meola. And he did some fast solo fill for Di Meola. The double bass technique he did there was way faster than Hogland can ever do.

yeah...I have a few tapes and things and a video of my live bass solo..I play bass on my demo...nothing fancy but there is a crazy , arpeggio run right before the guitar solo in a song called Father Felon...I'll post that eventually.

The live tape is being burned to disc..I may post it if I ever get the tape back from a friend..that has a five minite bass solo on it ...yeah it's awesome!

I am a bass God...who is bored to death of bass..

so Stu Hamm himself doesn't impress me, I humg out with Stu for a while talking shop and exchanging chops..I can play the same kind of crap he can...it's easy...it's no big deal for me to play like that..it bores me..it's all a 20 year old hat..I say this only because it's true.. The best drummers I know of are Dennis Chambers and Dave Weckl (he's just a monster drummer). Both are jazz drummers. I think in general jazz by its very nature forces musicians to be intensely creative. Thats why I play jazz myself, I have 3 main guitars, my Kelly (the "metal" guitar) my BC Rich (the rockin guitar, also good for metal riffing) and the Warmoth Custom I got from Doc Dryer, I use for jazz. Its got the most pristine clean tone, the pickups he has in there (Kinmans) are just incredible.

Thanks for the suggestions Bill, I'll check em out for sure. Though I think have heard Winds in passing and liked it.

he's sounding like a real drummer...that kicks ass...I hope he keeps it up and one day..I'll have my own built in drummer...that would be sweet!

I'm proud of that little shit..

I like Mike Portnoy better than Pert....but Portnoy wouldn't be around if it wern't for Pert..

My kid's favorite drummer in the world is Nick Barker that guy is amazing...that's his drum hero..!!!!
