The way I see it. I think any musician into "metal" would benefit especialy guitarist to draw from all styles ..as long as it some kind of great "musical" value. I like very challenging music..something to shoot for I suppose when I'm inspired by players that are beyound my abilities , no matter what their singer sounds like..and yes there are some pretty bad ones. But the elite of the death and black metal community normaly wouldn't have some screeching , cookie monster wannabe hack. The singers in these bands are very established in their genre as is ..Russel Allen , Tate or whoever is in power metal..
OK ..Let's take King Diamond and Arch Enemy for example...the reasone ANYONE wouldn't like those bands is because of the vocals . But you can't deny the talent in those bands..if you know anything about those two bands...you know damn well what I'm talking about. So if you don't like King's voice..fuck it..those riffs are killer. I always here people say I love that music but I can't take the vocals..SO , why don't you draw from what you do like from that talent. Take what you do like and use that in you're writing.
Think of it..Take you're favorite singer and plug him into any of those songs and riffs. You can do that on your own. Maybe it will get you out of that writing slump. Say that you always write and play riffs that are always like queensryche , dio..or whatever...and you want to come up with something a little more aggressive or "brutal" than you normaly play..for a kick in the ass in a song , for dynamics. Well how can you if you nothing but classic metal type stuff..
Take the Amott brothers in arch enemy for ex...if you like bands with awesome guitar harmonies like old Alice Cooper , Thin Lizzy ...hell even Stryper...you need to hear these guys...you're really missing out on some really awesome solos w / great harmonies with so much feel..songs within songs...just like any Oliva or Randy solo...very , very musical bastards they are....and they deserve the upmost respect and they really should be heard and enjoyed IMO..and they are just one example...there is so much amazing untapped talent out there that bekons to be heard..in ALL styles of metal...
it has helped me a great deal in writing and playing , ...and once those songs get into your head..you can't get them out...very addicting stuff.
