• God I hate car problems! (rant)

Flying back from my drummers house and the timing belt went out. Fucked up the header (I think that's what he called it, I'm no car expert. An oil change would be the extent of my car knowledge) too. He said getting the timing belt changed would be about $250, but labor and that other part are kicking my ass. It was totaled anywhere from $450 up to $600, cost of the header depending. I just dropped by today, and the valves on the header were bent. The mechanic said it may be possible to just trade those out.

How am I supposed to pay for it? That's right, my guitars. My parents can only help out so much, even though it's their car. However, no car = no job. So, I'll probably have to put a couple of guitars in the pawnshop for a month or so. Damn. The only guitar that's worth enough to get sufficient funds would be my Vandy. I don't want to part from that! That thing is my pride and joy (see avatar), it's been with me at every gig I've played, and even when I get better guitars it's not leaving the stage setup. It's a killer little axe, plays and sounds awesome. And it's my first serious guitar.

In the end, maybe my family will give me a bit more credibility for taking the initiative to getting the car unfucked. I won't live with the starving, mooching musician label, I'm not a bum and I will support myself goddammit!

Done now. Thanks for giving a glance for those who did.

Anybody else have similair stories of car breaking down and having to sell gear? I've seen a few classifieds posts here and there with such topics...

Sorry about that bro. I have a v6 Toyota Pickup with 120,000 miles on it. I have had 2 timing belts done on it. Both were done BEFORE they broke. This is an often overlooked maintanence item on a car.....until they bust.

The valves could be fucked. Is it a stick or auto? If it is a stick, and it was in gear when it went, they will def need work. If it is an automatic you may have gotten lucky.

It was a stick, and it was in gear when it snapped. We knew it was going to go soon, but no money so we crossed our fingers. Apparently that didn't work. I was hoping it would hold out until I got a job.

About six hours away from you. I live in the Idaho Falls area, southeast Idaho. Good to see another Idahoan though!

I'm a transplant from Minneapolis. I've been out here for almost 6 years now, and I've never regretted it.

Well, except for weeks like this where it's going to be 100+ for a few days.

What make of car do you have? Alot of mechanics will try to say you have what would be termed an "interference" motor. Meaning the when the piston comes up if the valve is opened it will be bent. Mitsubishi and Hondas are bad about this happening if the engine is running. Also in your owner's manual there is a stated interval for the replacement for the belt.

Yeah, it's gonna be like that here too (weather). The great thing about Idaho is one foot can be in a decently large city, and the other can be on camp grounds where you can do whatever the hell you want without anybody caring. I can sunbathe naked in my backyard without any care, or could until I moved into town, but whatever.
