I have two names for you when it comes to hockey play by play and color men:

Bob Cole and Harry Neale with Hockey Night In Canada. Bob Cole has been calling hockey games with HNIC since 1969 and Harry Neale is a former GM and Coach. These guys are faster than their south of the border colleagues and much more passionate about the game. I can't watch a game on US networks or ESPN. Bob and Harry are the kings of hockey, in my opinion.

Do yourself a favor and try and catch a game these two are working - you will not be disappointed.

There is a deal folks. We knew it was coming with all the coach signings and no-signings

Real hockey fans will put all the bullshit behind them as soon as the puck is dropped. If any fan stays who away from the NHL because of a labor dispute wasn't a real NHL fan to begin with.

[/ QUOTE ]

OUCH! You had to mention the coach losses, didn't you?

It's weird not having a Sutter Brudder somewhere on the roster. Of the 6, 5 have been Blackhawks...

Brian Sutter - Coach 2001-05
Brent Sutter - F|Coach 1991-98|1992-95
Darryl Sutter - F 1979-87
Duane Sutter - F 1987-90
Rich Sutter - F 1993-95

Ron is the only Sutter to never play or coach for the Blackhawks.

I agree with that Jimmy. I grew up in Detroit and got to watch HNIC for 22 years. They call a great game. I like Ralph for Dallas but he is too biased towards the Stars. Other than that in the US Gary Thorne is the man. Bud Lynch and Sid Able were cool in Detroit years ago.

Questions, answers about the NHL's labor agreement

Newsday
Published July 14, 2005

Q. Is the lockout over?

A. No, the players are still considered locked out, despite Wednesday's agreement between the NHL and the players' union. The lockout will only end following ratification of the new collective bargaining agreement by both the NHL Board of Governors and members of the NHLPA. The ratification process is scheduled to take place next week, when the players will gather to vote Wednesday in Toronto and the Governors are expected to do the same Thursday in Manhattan. Once the deal is ratified, then Commissioner Gary Bettman can officially declare the NHL unlocked.

Q. Exactly how long has the lockout been going on?

A. It has been 301 days, including the entire 2004-05 season. That's 1,230 regular-season games, plus the playoffs.

Q. What will be the first order of business once the deal is ratified?

A. The NHL will immediately conduct a draft lottery to determine the selection order in the entry draft, which has been on hold since mid-June. The lottery is expected to be run on a weighted scale that gives the best chance to teams that did not make the playoffs or have a No. 1 overall pick over the past three years. The draft is expected to be July 30 in Ottawa, where blue-chip prospect Sidney Crosby is the coveted prize and one of four teams--the New York Rangers, Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets and Pittsburgh Penguins--have the best chance to get him.

Q. What does the agreement mean for veteran players?

A. Teams will also have a week to exclusively negotiate with players from their 2003-04 roster who are set to become unrestricted free agents, as well as qualify restricted free agents. After that, the madness begins as teams rebuild their rosters from what is expected to be the largest pool of available players in league history.

Q. Will the 2005-06 season start on time?

A. Yes. Training camp is expected to open on Sept. 15, which is, coincidentally, the anniversary of the start of the lockout. It will be a short camp with exhibitions expected to start just five days in. The season itself might also start earlier than usual, with a tentative Oct. 5 date being discussed.

Q. Why did this have to take so long?

A. The NHL and the NHLPA literally rewrote the entire agreement, which is more than 600 pages long. It took the union almost five months to finally agree to start seriously negotiating a salary-cap system. Once that happened it was a slow and meticulous process that involved step-by-step procedure on every issue that could be collectively bargained. The NHL's new CBA is akin to the U.S. producing a new Constitution. Only now, "We the people ... " refers also to the players, who have become partners instead of merely hired hands.

Q. Will hockey regain a foothold with fans?

A. Early reaction among fans was muted. Some were happy to have the game back, while others still have plenty of resentment built up from the prolonged stalemate.

It's gonna be hard on the kid. With the league in the state that it is, a lot of eyes are on him to be something more than Wayne was. Gretzky brought hockey to the masses. Crosby has to re-sell the league to the spurned.

I'm glad I'm some fat guy filling a seat at the United Center and not this kid. I've got enough of a drinking problem when pressure hits...

Crosby will be ok with the pressure. He's was under a microscope the entire time in Rimouski and it just rolled off his back. This kid is the real deal and can draw the crowds to the game. When he would come here to play our team those games were the only guaranteed sell outs for the arena. Everyone wanted to see what he was going to do next.

He's fast, strong, a magician with the puck and has that ability to see what the next play is going to be. The comparisons to Gretzky are probably tough on him but the kid has no ego and his father is handling him very well.

From all I've seen out here - Crosby lives only a couple of hours away - with the unending press coverage of the kid, he won't be like Lindros. I hope.

Re: DEAL REACHED!!!!!!!! (NHL)

He does have a lot of expectations to fill. Major Juniors is a great competitive league but just because your a star there doesn't necessarily mean you'll be a star in the NHL. I remember a lot of the same things were being said about Thorton when he was coming up too. He did turn into a good player but not super star caliber as of yet. The league needs a new super star who can change the face of game, is Crosby that? He could be, he has all the ingredients and has a good attitude too. I hope he doesn't get into contract BS. Under the new CBA rookie salaries will be capped too so he could go to Europe and make more cash. I know he wants to play in the NHL though but it is a business too...

I know the league want to increase offense but as long as team defense is winning cups I don't see a major change unless they screw up the game by removing the red line for the pansy cherry pickers I think it would be a big mistake if they do that. The game is great the way it is, just shrink the goalies pads an inch, enforce neutral zone violations (clutching and grabbing) and bring back tag up off-sides.

Crosby has already signed some very lucrative endorsement deals, so he's got money covered. We will see him in NHL and he will play his legs off everynight. He's a really good defensive player too, he's always chasing the puck and trying to create opportunities.

Shawn, have you ever seen him play? He's as good as any I have ever seen pre NHL. We had the Oilers farm team here in Sydney for a number of years and I was able to see some fantastic players come in every week and Crosby definitely has what it takes. If he can remain healthy and keep his head in check, he will have no problems in the league. You have to wonder what kind of physical abuse he's going to take. If they can catch him, of course.

I better put away my pom-poms for a while or you'll think I'm on his payroll.

No I haven't seen him in a game, just highlights and was impressed with what I saw. I live in the Dallas area so no major juniors here. I'm originally from Detroit so I know what the league are like (played Junior B, Paddock Pools-JR Wings), those games certainly would have filled the void from the NHL being locked out thats for sure
