Re: US Army\'s new recruit

It pains me to say this being a Navy Rescue Swimmer, but what about the Coast guard? They have Rescue Swimmers, door gunners on helos and other adrenaline pumping jobs.

My only real concern is the thought of a chaplain/ 1st LT walking up to my door. I wouldn't be alone though, there are several million parents who, without a doubt, have that same thought.

      [/ QUOTE ]

You're a far better man than I am bro.

I couldn't/wouldn't allow it if at all humanly possible.

Yeah, I will be going over to the sandbox im probably Januaryish...that's cool, been there, done that, and I'm with almost 2000 heavily armed/trained Marines by my side (that makes me feel a whole lot better ).

This sounds cliched, but I don't really care what happens to me if something happend. Krista will be set for life, without me, but still set. My guitars are already "willed" away to a JCF member (although he doesn't know that yet ).

I just couldn't, as a parent, realize my child was in harms way, ever.

Hypocritical, oh yeah.....failed logic, probably, but that's how I feel about it.

        Extremely understandable logic LPC...

So you may still be able to stear him towards the Navy or the Airforce.

[/ QUOTE ] Seems to be his final choice. He's been a Navy brat for all his life. Now there is an outside choice of him joining the Merchant Marines, cause he has an application in with them, but he's been waiting for several months for them to call, but nothing yet, so it's highly unlikely he'll get a call before Monday, which is his deadline. As for steering him towards Air Force/ Navy, it ain't gonna happen. I tried and he's mind-set. He says, even if he did join another branch, it a 4-month wait. He wants to go now.

[/ QUOTE ]You might point out that it'll still be 6 months before he's deployed if he's itching to be in combat, and that in the USAF for example, he could both be more comfortable and possibly do more damage to the enemy than being on patrol in a Humvee exposed to IEDs. He could be the guy they call in when they call in the air strikes.Or, failing that, doesn't every branch have an aviation function? Being involved with flight, preferably plane flight, would probably be the safest choice. At any rate, I salute your son for his bravery and patriotism. God bless him and keep him safe.

+1! Sorry I can't help with your questions either. My dad was an Army guy but that was back in '44-45 so his experience probably wouldn't apply.

We are like..ummmm....how can I explain it....civilian attitudes while being soldiers at the same time....professional as can be when called upon.....but more than willing to have fun when it is time to have fun...there really is NO better job out there.....where else in the world will you be trained to disarm the most primitive weapons (think "remove feathers....break arrow ) to the absolutely most sophisticated (Patriot missiles...fully armed nuclear weapons...the latest and greatest IED's...those are improvised explosive devices...ie; home made bombs...terrorist type devices)....the training is absolutely phenomenal ...nothing else like it in the world...and when and if he gets out of the service after receiving this training.....the jobs that he can get pay VERY well.....just something to think about ...plus he gets the right to wear cool T-shirts like "EOD Bomb Tech...If you see me running...you better catch up ..

Yep, I believe he missed D-Day but was present for the breakout and drive across France then spent the winter of '44-45 on the front in Lorraine/Alsace before crossing over into Germany, getting injured, and being evacuated back to England where he sat out the rest of the war in a hospital.

Wow... That is a big move for your child to make. As an American, I thank him, and you. I wish him the best of luck.

As for basic, he'll be fine. I've got a friend that, probably couldn't tear his way out of a wet paper bag and he made it just fine. You do what you're told, try to stay out of trouble, and be the one who does the least amount of push ups

My friend actually was just stateside for awhile, he was in South Korea for 1.5 years, then home for leave. Now he's in *I want to say Ft. Hood in Texas, but I may be wrong on the fort, I know he's in Texas*. He told me that, if you're in this fort for (I forget how many months, I want to say 18) that you're almost guaranteed a plane to Iraq.

Congrats to you and him, good luck to both of you, and trust me, every opinionated asshole of an American (myself) owes families like yours, a big thank you.

                            [/ QUOTE ]

EOD is a good occupation. I imagine it's the same as the Navy. I almost jumped over to EOD, cause my job in the Navy was a gunner on board ships, so I've been dealing with A&E for a long time. Though I'm retired from active duty, as a civilian, my job is to train sailors in handling, transporting and storing A&E. So, essentially, I still go out on Navy ships, sail like I use to, (and I love it) but now I get to go out with my long hair, earring and walk around in civilian clothes. No duty, my own cabin (stateroom)

And I always take my Charvel with me.

In the Navy though, you can't come right in as an EOD member. I assume it's the same as the Army. You have to be of a minimum pay-grade, or work in a field that deals with it to get the experience before you're accepted.

Get back to my son though, he wants to run around with a rifle .
