Hey Don~ I really can't answer any of your questions but I did want to ask you to thank your son for us. We need good men in the military and their service is definitely unmeasurable. Thanks!

+1! Sorry I can't help with your questions either. My dad was an Army guy but that was back in '44-45 so his experience probably wouldn't apply. [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

I have no knowledge of the Army....closest I've came is attending a school at Fort Leonard Wood, MO (Lost in the woods [img]/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]) and a couple joint-ops with them.

Just curious, why the Army??

Now, also, you may want to talk to him and re-think his plan on going infantry. The Army is HURTING now for people and recruits. If your son does well on the ASVAB (110 and higher), have him look into a technical field to use AFTER the Army, however long he decides to stick around.

For sheer lifestyle and troop-welfare, the Air Force is hard to beat (there Mark, I said it [img]/images/graemlins/baby.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/eviltongue.gif[/img]).

Same here. Everyone in my family was Army, but all back in the WWII, Korean and Vietnam era. I was the only squid. [img]/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]

I'm sure things are changed dramatically.

Beats the sh*t outa me. Maybe because I did 20 years Navy and he wants to be different and succesful in his own way. (I always pushed the Navy)

Infantry is what he wants. [img]/images/graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img] Maybe it's his 'Billy Badass' personna.

Air Force/Navy would be the way to go for technical experience/comfort, but it is what it is.

Infantrists are cannonfodder. If he doesn't want to go to a military academy try to get him into procurement - full of opportunities.

Hypocritical, yes, wholeheartedly, but being totally honest.

I don't agree with the Army's training, I don't like/understand their leadership principles. That's just my opinion, and no disrespect is intended, just how I've seen them and witnessed their training and "leaders".

If I had a choice, and had to choose a branch for my son, honestly, I'd point him in the Marines direction. Am I biased, perhaps [img]/images/graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img]

The Marines are trained much more for combat, especially if they go the infantry route.

Unlike the other services, Marines are ALL combatants, male and female. We have no organic medical or religious personnel, we rely on the Navy for that. </font>

As a parent I can guess the emotional roller coaster you must be on. Proud that your son wants to serve in a branch of the US Military. But deeply concerned about his choice of the Army.

If my kids come to me wanting to join I can't lie and say that I would not try and talk them out of it. If they were insistant on joining I would push the Navy or Air Force. I look back at my time in the Navy and there was some good times.

Your son definately has my deepest respect. Most of todays youth don't seem to care about anything but themselves. Remember though he is not accountable for his service obligation until he takes the oath at the MEPS station. So you may still be able to stear him towards the Navy or the Airforce.

Seems to be his final choice. He's been a Navy brat for all his life. Now there is an outside choice of him joining the Merchant Marines, cause he has an application in with them, but he's been waiting for several months for them to call, but nothing yet, so it's highly unlikely he'll get a call before Monday, which is his deadline. As for steering him towards Air Force/ Navy, it ain't gonna happen. I tried and he's mind-set. He says, even if he did join another branch, it a 4-month wait. He wants to go now.

Well, it's different. When I was in, I didn't have to worry about the safety of myself, cause I controlled my own actions. I really didn't give it a thought about anyone's feeling about me going into the service, cause it's was what I wanted to do.

Now I'm on the other side of the cue ball.(as a parent) I have a child going in. It's a different feeling, cause I don't have control.

To me, the military is the best, specifically for him. My only real concern is the thought of a chaplain/ 1st LT walking up to my door. I wouldn't be alone though, there are several million parents who, without a doubt, have that same thought.
