Surf's Up Dudes!

Any surfers here?
I think it is a really cool thing but haven't ever tried it myself because we don't have waves at all.
How long does it take to learn to surf, I don't want to be a Kelly Slater or something but just be capable of doing the basic stuff.

Step 1 - Find water with surf and NO CARNIVOROUS SEA LIFE! Kinda kills the fun when you get gnawed on [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]
Also try to avoid areas with lots of rocks and coral too close to the surface - scracthed and bloody in the water sucks, especially water that's full of carnivorous sea life [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Step 2 - Get thee a board. Longboards like the Old Guys or a modern short board, whatever.

Step 3 - Hang Ten.

And remember, if you can't do something well, at least enjoy doing it poorly [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

i live in huntington beach,ca. endrik. it is commonly referred to as surf city usa as the first surfing in the states was done in H.B. i've been out a few times but let me tell you, i can hit a baseball, throw a football or any ball like a rocket, skate, shoot, pass, i must say i am a really good athlete, but surfing is the hardest thing i've ever tried to do. practice my good man. practice. i was all over the place out there , it is not easy in the beginning. and just because i ride a pretty decent skateboard still has no bearing on it. once you get up on a wave though there is no feeling in the world like it. that's what i am told by the surf rats that i used to teach guitar to.

I've been surfing for eight years, it took me about two or three to get decent. I live in Ft. Pierce FL, so we get a little wave, recently I went to Costa Rica with some friends...good waves down there for cheap. (trip cost)

i used to surf in san francisco...ocean beach and occasionally santa cruz, but not since living in WA. Depending on the surf you can pick it up in one day. E.g., in Waikiki in Hawaii, they have these easy 2 foot waves that start like hundreds of yards out. If you have a long board, you can easily catch these and ride them all the way in. i've seen soccer moms catch waves there. now in ocean beach, there's been days when i couldn't even paddle out. I think I'm pretty good at sports, specially on running, jumping, bike riding, basketball, skiing, darts [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] and not a bad swimmer either. I have a pretty good balance too so I hope I don't have to learn to surf too long.

For a beginner on decent waves, definately, that and jumping up quickly.
