Gretzky to take over as coach of Coyotes

        August 8, 2005

PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Coyotes scheduled a news conference for today to make a ''major'' announcement amid reports that Wayne Gretzky, the NHL's all-time leading scorer, will be named their new coach.

The Arizona Republic reported Sunday that Gretzky, the Coyotes' managing partner, would be introduced as the coach. ESPN.com confirmed the report.

''We have a major announcement to make Monday,'' said Coyotes spokesman Rick Braunstein, who declined to elaborate on the reason for the news conference.

Gretzky, co-owner Steve Ellman, general manager Mike Barnett and team captain Shane Doan didn't immediately return calls seeking comment.

There had been speculation for more than a year that Gretzky would move from the Coyotes' front office to behind their bench. Barnett originally asked Gretzky in June 2004 if he was interested in coaching.

But the nine-time MVP wanted to wait until a new collective-bargaining agreement was in place before deciding whether to coach. That happened in mid-July, but the negotiations ran on. Gretzky is in the final year of a five-year contract with the team.

''One day it's yes, and the next day it's no,'' Bobby Hull, the agent-brother of Coyotes forward Brett Hull, said late Sunday. "I don't know what's going on.''

The Republic also reported that former Detroit Red Wings assistant Barry Smith would be one of Gretzky's assistants. Former Coyotes player Rick Tocchet or interim head coach Rick Bowness will be his other assistant, according to the paper and ESPN.com.

Gretzky retired in 1999 after 20 seasons in the NHL. ''The Great One'' helped the Edmonton Oilers win four Stanley Cups and leads the NHL's all-time goals, assists and points lists in the regular season and playoffs.

Gretzky already has committed to serve as executive director for Team Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

Re: Gretzky to take over as coach of Coyotes

Does a excellent player make a good coach? There have been mishaps in the past by using this formula but i am definately curious to check this out.Especially our first game against them Yotes.I went skating one day after a STARS/COYOTES game and just so happens the Coyotes were practicing in the ajoining rink.It was so cool seeing Tyson Nash getting in a few fights that night, then the next day hes just on the other side of the glass shooting pucks with a black eye.Lol. Does anyone here know where i could find a link to the Crosby on Leno video?
