• Migraines are a mother....

I am sick of having these things. I have tried every type of medicine available. They usually work the first couple of times, after that, they just make me sick as hell.

Give you an idea. I have had broken ribs, a fractured face ( it has nothing to do with me being ugly...I was just born ugly ) , scuffed up from fights, etc. Pressure points and stun guns don't even effect me. Pepper spray ( the good stuff law enforcement uses ) makes my eyes water.....thats about it. I never really feel pain. If I do, its more of just an inconvenience than anything.....it never slowed me down.

Migraines fold me up and make me cry like a little girl however. I am not just talking about discomfort....I am talking full blown tears, lack of vision and sometimes a black out from the pain.

The usual culprit is sunlight. If sunlight hits my eyes the right way, I am done for. I usually have a bearable migraine everyday. I get a full blown migraine about once a week. I have tried to cut caffeine, nicotine, etc. No effect. I have had dye shot in my veins and have had multiple tests run....no one seems to find anything.

Anyone else experience this? How do you handle it? -Lou

I used to have extreme migraines too. They would be triggered by rain, rain would cause a sudden drop in pressure and fill the air with oxygen.

I knew if I went out, when it had just rained, I'd be done for and I could spend the rest of the day and night tossing around of pain.

Caffeïne actually helps a great deal. I drink non-chilled, room temp pepsi every day. The doctor actually told me to drink a glass of cola/pepsi every morning to stop possible headaches. I haven't been affected much lately, but sometimes I get them again.

Painkillers I use(d) are Dafalgan Codeïne and Apranax. You could even opt for valium.

I'm not sure, but weed might actually offer relief in such extreme cases of pain as yourself.
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

Yes. I have had migraines and they are every bit as vicious as you describe. They run in my family, but I only got them when I was pregnant.
You might look into Feverfew (and evaluate your diet and lifestyle if you haven't already)... I have a ton of resources about this plant if you'd like to know more. Take care... goodluck.

Be wary of painkillers (codeine etc.) and excessive caffeine. My Father got addicted to painkillers for his seriously debilitating migraines and ended up in re-hab. It just led to very very bad things.
Just a warning.
The painkillers actually caused him to have kickback migraines for years. Once he got off of them he no longer had migraines. Go figure.

Migraines have got to be the worst pain in the world next to childbirth. I used to get them more often than I do now, but when they hit, its for days at a time. Light, sound,...everything is multiplied a thousand times and makes my head feel like my brain is ready to explode and make a nice new design on the wallpaper for all to enjoy. I went to the ER on base over them once in full tears wanting anything that would take some of the pain away. I begged the doc for something....anything, I didnt care. He gave me a script for percs and set up an appointment with my primary care doc, whom I had never seen before. This guy, probably in his mid to late twenties, flat out told me I was addicted to the pain meds I was on (I had been taking them for a couple days mind you) and that he would not give me another script for anything. He blamed my "mild headaches" on my "addiction" to caffiene. Then he told Sam basically I was gonna be a bitch for a couple weeks while I went through my "withdrawals" and to just deal with it. Gotta love the military for that one!!

Ive yet to find anything that helps at all other than sleep and time. They get so bad I cant get out of bed, and when I try, I end up sick to my stomach...then puke, which makes the headache worse.

I know this isnt any help, but at least ya know your not the only one!!

They actually prescribe MDA (more commonly known as "E" or "Ecstacy" for all you ravers! ) for migraines. Kerry (my gf) used to get heavy-duty migraines, and they prescribed a very mild dosage of MDA to take the "edge off".
It worked, her migraines became less frequent, and less severe over time...although she still gets one every once in a blue moon now. I've had one in my life, and it's the worst imaginable pain one will ever experience! It drove me to pound several holes in my bedroom wall with my head...then I got really sick to my stomach, and it was all over.

Yeah, someone who has never had one would not understand. I guess the best way to put it is like this: You do not want light or sound of any kind. Usually, you want the air around you as cold as you can get it with the blankets pulled up to your neck. The pain feels like an implosion and an explosion at the same time. Kinda like your head is about to split apart, but, cave in at the same time.-Lou

Re: Migraines are a mother....

I get small ones every once in a while. Once or twice a year I'll get big ones and will have to sit in the shower for hours trying to get rid of it. It's strange, everybody says cold helps theirs, but it makes mine much worse.

Have you tried Imitrex? It's expensive as fuck, and dangerous to use (you have to give yourself a shot, and if you hit a vein it instantly fucks up your heart. How's that for reassurance?), but for some it works great. My mom used to get them really bad too, and this cleared hers up almost instantly. In fact, when you go to the hospital this is usually what they give you.

Good luck bro!

I get them too. I get what my doctors call "Tension Migraines". I dont get the vomiting and things like my Mom and alot of other people get but the pain is unbearable! Any headache I get will turn into a massive migraine if I dont take something right away. Usually about 1000mg of Ibuprofen will stop it before it gets too bad, but if I dont get any within the first 20 or 30 minutes then nothing will help except time, cold rag, quiet, and darkness!

As an alternative:

My Dad used to get full-on migranes more or less every Saturday, starting at lunchtime, lasting through to Sunday morning if he was lucky, or Monday morning if not. Doctors tried loads of different pills, he changed his diet etc, and nothing worked.

Long story short, he had a course of acupuncture and virtually over night the migranes disappeared. He's the least 'new-age' person you can imagine, so we were all surprised that it worked.....He now has acupuncture 'top-ups' once a year or so, and that's it - job done.

I don't get them frequently but when I do get them nothing knocks them out but time. I usually put in ear plugs, make the room as dark as possible and take a hand full of sleeper downers and sleep it off until it passes. Sound, movement and light KILL me when I have a migraine.

Cluster Migraines run in my family. They definitely suck big time. Small amounts of caffeine do help because it helps regulate the blood vessels, but too much will make it work. You have to be very careful with meds because you will get rebound headaches that are worse with the migraine. There are tons of triggers and everybody is different. You have to track everything you do to truly figure out your triggers. Not all meds work for everyone though. I have heard that Imitrex is like a godsend, but have not tried it myself. Mine are the light, sound, smell sensitve, fell like I'm going to puke my guts out kind but know if I do I'll hurt worse kind of migraines. Mostly, I just have to take time to get rid of it. I've lived for years with headaches pretty much everyday to the point that I am so used to having one, I don't notice anything but the most severe. You may try a cold pack directly on the area, or a heating pad - that's what my aunt has to use. Of course she has to go to the hospital and they basically give her a shot of morphine because they get so severe. Acupuncture is also supposed to work - you may give it a try. Otherwise, all I can say is I feel your pain, be kind to your self and lay down!

I used to have them all the time, not so much now in the years since I started taking multiple meds for high blood pressure.

If you have high blood pressure, even if you feel fine, take meds or adjust your salt intake, do what you have to to get it down. My heart is now enlarged to 3x normal size due to longterm untreated HBP. By ignoring it for years I've probably taken 20-30 years off my lifespan. Don't blow it off like I did.

I did see an ad the other day for some headache cream that you rub on your foreheas and it's supposed to be instant relief. It looks like an oversize gluestick! I don't recall if they mentioned it was for migraines though.

My sympathy is with you all, as I do know how they feel. Death would almost be welcome in the midst of an attack.
