• Health/Nutrition Questions..related to working out

This is for all the nutritionalists out there...
I really want to drop my body fat percentage (not sure what it's at, but I want to get back around 5% or so), get more cut and defined. I've searched and searched online for examples of meal plans to help increase the metabolism and to define more of the muscle, but haven't really found much at all. I'm looking for examples of foods or meal plans that I can follow. I do free weights and also try to do around 40 minutes on the elliptical when I workout...lately it's only been maybe 3 days a week...which is probably not enough. Should I be doing more cardio?

Thanks,
- Joel

Cardio is key, but I don't think there is really one approach that will work for everyone, diet especially. Experimentation is usually what it takes to find your routine. Years back a trainer at a local gym had me on a regimen that probably was designed for someone juicing! Not this kid

Start with this book. Ignore the title, he really should have called it something like "The Grand Unified Theory of Nutrition, Exercise, and Good Health" or something like that, it's all about how to drop fat. Better yet, before launching into telling you what to do, it lays out, in some staggeringly well-researched early chapters, the hows, whys, and consequences of different actions on your body. Better than any other single resource I've ever seen.

+1. What works for one will not work for all. I've found a low carb/low fat diet w/ some cardio (running 4 miles a day) helped burn off a lot of my body fat. I didn't work out with weights, so I didn't have anything defined, but I did lose 50 lbs in about a month and a half. Is that healthy, probably not, but it worked and I've kept it off for over a year

Bottom line, burn more calories than you take in. You can either do that by eating less or exercising more (or both). A low fat diet is the best way to go to cut calories since fat has more calories per gram than proteins or carbohydrates. Plus you're more likely to lower your cholesterol and blood pressure that way. I'm not a big fan of low carb diets. If you exercise, you're going to burn off those carbs anyway. Plus, it's really easy to fail at those diets. Try to eat about 5-6 small meals per day, that will boost your metabolism. Get plenty of fiber via fresh fruits and vegetables. Keep exercising and drinking lots of water and you'll be fine.

A lot of people I know say that you have to have a balance of cardio and weight training. The cardio helps burn fat, and weight training builds muscle, which in turn causes you to burn more calories when exercising. Thats been my workout regimen, and i'm feeling pretty good. And water...very important

Yes everyone is different but, here is what I did and my % dropped 3% in a few weeks.

1 huge bowl of Vector cereal
1 black coffee
1 grapefruit
1 bag of garden salad to pick at through the day. Eat it like you would a bag of chips. No dressing.
1 can of tuna in vegitable broth otherwise it just too tastless. Just strain it and eat it plain. I actually like it now.
1 grapefruit
Workout with a bottle of juice and ceatine.
1 Protein shake with about 30-40 grams of protine.
Don't eat after 8pm. (Two hurs before I go to sleep)

I have been veering off it but, I am done camping and shit so I'm gunna start again. I felt better than ever eating like that and even looked forward to every meal.

Again thats just what I did.

Re: Health/Nutrition Questions..related to working

Try about 40min of cardio in a rather fast pace, every day. and do it like 2-3 hours after a meal, not first thing in the morning w/o breakfast, as it is catabolic and burns muscle also.

try to get your weight (lbs in grams) of protein a day. (200lbs=200grams protein) and about 150-200 carbs depending on what you weigh, and eat lean try to replace fat-meals like steak with tuna. and have maybe one fat-meal a day.

These are some excellent tips guys...thanks for the help. Taking any supplements besides protein is out of the question...I'm definitely not doing that. I'm going to have to do more cardio it seems as well as take more protein too. Thanks for the book recommendation I'll be ordering that.
Let's say I'm 200lbs...is it necessary to have around 200g of protein/day even if I'm not doing any weights that day? I've read that excess protein will eventually turn to fat like carbs do....?

Thanks - Joel
