    A democratic society in which the citizens vote on the country's course of action by voting on their leaders is dependent on said society being properly informed. That's why our founding fathers specifically wrote the 1st ammendment.

    Man, a lot of you guys put way too much faith in an unchecked goverment. Just because we are at war. The framers of our Constitution never had such blind faith in government. That's why the right to bear arms exists in the Constitution as well. Charleton Heston, while he was President of the NRA, said it was the ultimate fail safe right guaranteed by Constitution to keep an elected goverment in check.

      Don't worry 'bout China, folks. They got nothin!

      1. As long as Taiwan and Japan stand, the Chinese ability to project power is extremely limited. If the the Chinese thought they even had a REMOTE chance of takin Taiwan - they would have done it.

      - Taiwan has a very nice fleet of quiet diesel subs for the express purpose of destroying the Chinese economy. Sink 2 tankers in the Strait of Malaga and China collapses in 2 weeks.

      - China has about 1/10th the amphib capability need to attack what is essentially a big-ass fortress. And you can bet there will a butt-load of subs waiting for 'em.

      - Japan has a superior blue-water force, and they aren't even trying (yet).

      - China is currently experiencing massive gas shortages, with some gas-lines four lanes wide and 1/4 mile long. Their strategic reserves allow for about 1 week of military operations.

      - The Chinese Air Force is a joke. The pilots are very under trained, as the military cannot afford to let them log the flight hours necessary to compete with the INDIAN air force, let alone the USAF.

      - Are we paying attention? Pull up an atlas. The current disposition of US forces (Iraq included) is no accident. Neat little circles around China, Iran, and North Korea. Russia is the wild card.

      - The Chinese economy is chugging along nicely, but is 100% dependant on the US. Take out the US - no economy.

      - It is true that the trade imbalance pours money into the Chinese coffers. It is also true that extremely cheap goods allow Americans to maintain their standard of living while pouring tax dollars into State and Federal coffers.

      - If you think the statements regarding a bio-attack are exaggerated, consider the new strains of flu that are popping up in - China. After all, the only way to know if it won't affect Chinese is to test it on Chinese. I doubt they (or anyone) possess bio-tech capable of national specivity.

      - The US economy is capable of MASSIVE reduction and/or cutbacks, China is not. We drive SUV's because we can afford to. Only a small percentage of Chinese own autos, yet gas production in China cannot meet current demand.

      - Weaponry currently being deployed in Iraq negates the effectiveness of a great number of existing Chinese weapon systems.

      - The Peoples Republic of China has never won a war with any country not named Nepal or Tibet (or China). Vietnam smacks 'em around on a regular basis, fer Pete's sake!

      - 100,000,000 troops are useless if you can't get them to where the shooting is. It's a long walk/swim to anywhere from anywhere in China.

      - The deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq have produced a highly experienced cadre of non-commissioned officers unequalled on Earth. Similar benefits for our Special Forces, Navy, and Air Force. And our munitions are fresh and battle tested.

      - The Chinese military is almost entirely conscripted, with little to no training or equipment. A large portion will desert at the first opportunity - a problem with conscripted militaries.

      They have the edge in sheer numbers (an edge only on Eastern Chinese soil). The US has the edge in deployable land forces, overwhelming space/air/naval superiority, a stronger economy, better access to energy sources.... and 10,000 nukes of varying yields and delivery systems. And that's not counting the 'black' stuff we don't know about. Add the Aussie, Japanese, and Indian miltaries into the mix...

      Don't sweat it.

                  -As taxpayers, the government is ultimately responsible to us (in theory). That makes the military (or any other function of government) an investment of OURS. And we damn well have the right to know what they're doing (until you get into sensitive information, and the day to day on the ground in Iraq is not sensitive information). I personally think we should have fucked up Afghanistan proper, before we went off looking for irrelevent targets. The embedded thing is a sham anyway. They're basically the Pentagon's bitches.

                  -And in regards to China, I don't know why we deal with them in the first place. Cuba gets an embargo but we're giving China a rusty trombone. I'd consider myself a libertarian, no problem with enterprise here, but we're setting us up for a fall dealing with these FUCKING COMMIES. We havn't learned our lesson? They WILL expand, and it's our dollars propping them up. America's number one priority should be self-sufficiency, or close to it.
