Re: October Guitar World

I doubt there are many people on these boards who are better songwriters than Billy Corgan. Guitar playing? Sure...But the songwriting is what sells that many albums.

Re: October Guitar World

I guess from what I was exposed to via media , MTV or whatever.. his material didn't impress me enough to investigate his music..

and Smashing pumpkins had more hits than I can count thru the years and none of them...not a one , is my cup of tea..as far as his "music" goes.. his voice especially....to ME it's disturbing to be honest...like nails on a chalk board.

I guess I'm just a one track minded , disgruntled metal fuckwad that just don't care for that kind of stuff...

I never liked the radio...even as a kid..when the song "Billy don't be a hero" was HUGE...for the obvious reason!!!!

that prolly started it...

The radio always pissed me off...my whole life..from that stupid song ..to disco...to R & B and rap...ahhhh jeez...I have ZERO desire for that stuff..all of it...all those horrible 70's songs ..Sky Rockets in Flight..Afternoon Delight"...that's the same exact kind of sound to me..just newer..

songwriting and musical taste is subjuctive...do I think he writes a "Good" song..HELL NO!!

But so many others do...obviously!!

would "I" write a song like that stuff even if I could...fuck NO!!!

but MOST others don't care about the music I love most...just like minded metal heads...and that's all ..

there is other music besides metal that I do think is great..like classical and etc...but NOTHING even close to "pop"...

"pop music" to me is my kryptonite...it drains my will to live!

That's funny, cuz pop music drains my will for others to live

And thank you for the "Afternoon Delight" lyrics. I finally get that song outta my head, and you gotta spill it on the board.
Thanks prick

your welcome NEWC...Have you seen that movie Anchorman with Will Ferrel yet...funny as hell...well they pay homage to that lil' ditty...

That's my point..songs like that sound EXACTLY like stuff like Smashing Pumpkins...it's all the same to me...it's a Radio Gaga (Queen)...

Metal and that whole "blow up your radio" attitude was the soundtrack to how I felt way back...and especially NOW!!!

I had a T shirt that said DISCO SUCKS...almost thirty freakin' years ago..well in hinsight I'd take disco any day of the week to what I had tio endure thru the entire ebonical 90's..

I never thought I hear "Music" worse than disco..I was wrong!

some of those disco sings had some slammin' bass lines!!!

Billy Corgan to ME falls into this catagory...just radio swill...I hate it!

yeah they are not nearly as bad as alot of other pop bands...but they are a pop band...and I never gave two shits about anything..remotely.."pop"

The closest to "pop" as I could get was Van Halen...dancin' in the streets , Jump and shit like that...but that is where I drew the line and never crossed it...and never will.

Black Sabbath wrote great songs.
Led Zeppelin wrote great songs.
Creedence wrote damn great songs.
Bob Dylan wrote great songs, but couldn't sing worth a damn.

Corgan, Cobain, Vedder, and most of those 90's Grunge groups couldn't write or sing worth a damn.

Soundgarden was the best thing to come out of Seattle since Hendrix.

Bill, ABBA has some AWSOME bass lines, I'm not kidding.

Personally I like pop as much as I like rock, and there are more afwul things than hiphop and r'n'b ....... like trance, euro-beat, hard-style etc. Unknown in the US but in some Europe country's that shit is popular.

as a matter of fact...I'd go with the hot poker..much less painful..

Creedence sucks ass so bad it's not even funny. John Fogerty's voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard. I'd rather listen to Elmo sing "Elmo's Song". In fact, I'd rather listen to ABBA. Oh hell, I'd even rather listen to Celine Dion.

Soundgarden had a few good tunes but so much of their music sounded like they were running a cat through washing machine. Fuck, some of their songs were hard to listen to.

He may not play like that on his records, but I've seen clips of Corgan as a teen shredding Van Halenish leads. I'm sure he can play a bit.

Having said that, I'm definitely not a Smashin Pumpkins fan. I did like Siamese Dream for a short while when it came out though.

The October issue is pretty good... alot of cool lessons and such.

He was one of my serious influences when i started playing. Along with Cobain. They are 2 of the greatest most prolific songwriters of their generation. IMO.....
You can't control what influences you musically. I have always liked their stuff from day one....
The "god" reference was tongue in cheek. I do not think that he is actually god, no. Lighten up Francis.

I bought the new Nevermore CD and was underwhelmed to say the least, but i didnt come on here and say they were GAY or i didn't like em. But i don't. Granted the guitar is exceptional but the overall sound is exactly like about 100 other bands in that Genre. Average at best....

Never did like soundgarden either. Melvins will always be my favorite from WA. Mudhoney is a distant second.

Since nevermore...there has been a couple of nevermore wannabes...but tell me exactly what other bands sound like Nevermore...you mentioned there was a 100 in that genre that do...I'm not asking for that 100..

I hear a huge Pretty Boy Floyd influence in Nevermore's music. How many strings does Loomis use? I only hear the similarities on the D string.
