What is the best prescription Anxiety drug?

I was wondering, there are a lot of legally medicated folks out there in TV land, what are the pros and cons of each to 'get you by'?

I only know a little about xanax, heard of prozac, and there are a few others that get tossed around alot.

From all of the commercials, these drugs make you live in SoCal in a never ending late summer in slow motion where everyone loves you and you smile a lot. Maybe I am missing something, but sounds like the way everyone should be living?

I've taken a couple xanax's that I got from a friend, and they put me in a deep sleep. I'm pretty happy prior to this sleep though. I sleep through my alarm 7 hours later... I'd imagine you get "used" to them.

My exwife did well on prozac, angelic it seemed, till she missed a day or so, and then she'd go criminally insane... Truly and seriously...

As someone who deals with prescription drugs on a daily basis, most of them are about the same as each other. Differences may include duration of action and slight differences in side effect profiles but they pretty much all have the same mech. of action. They are a group of drugs called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. Word in the pharma industry is that Lexapro is a good one and so is Zoloft. Someare indicated for different disease states but it is pretty much understood that this is class effect and that they all do the same things. i.e, makes you happy, puts you at ease, pain management, etc. Hope that helps.....

I used xanax for a while many years ago. It made the "I think Im dying" type stuff go away. It cleared my head so I could sleep without a million things going through my head. I didnt abuse it, I only took it when needed and after a while I didnt need it anymore so I gave the rest to my brother in law who was at the time a walking pharmacy. LOL! It had no side effects for me at all.

...Anyway, I'm on Xanax right now. I have post trama stress dissorder. The long term drugs don't seem to do a damn thing especialy if your anxiety is situational. If your anxiety is situational Xanax is the absolute best way to go.Buspar has been known to work as well. Watch out for Xanax though. You can get seriously addicted. This only becomes a problem when you can't afford or find Xanax from one of the many happy suppliers on our fine city streets. 8)! Be carefull.

PS Weed can work as well. Don't forget the bud.

I did effexor and welbutrin(sp). They make life ok but the draw back for me were the PP issue. I'll be blunt and say they make it near impossible to bust a nut. I lost my insurance and had to quit my legal habit. The come down sucked total ass. It felt like my brain was shivering or spasming in my skull. I am more of a holistic [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] fan now and really just dont give a shit about the little things. After getting laid off I was able to see that the job is not the end all be all and everything will not end. My point to this is that being on them is nice, but the sudden stop is a bitch. For a while I felt like a rubber band that had lost its ability to stetch. I would get stressed and pissed at the drop of a hat. I think in alot of situations these things are over prescribed, but for some people there is truly a chemical emballance that makes them needed. Bottom line, if it is a matter of just growing a pair and not letting things get to you I personally think people would be better off with out them.

Lexapro works best for me. Prozac, and Welbutrin did not work well for me. I think everybody is different. Bad part, it took about 4-6 weeks for any of 'em to do anything for me... AND they all have negative sexual side effects... [img]/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

Without a doubt. I use it for flying or when I get anxious. You don't even need a big dosage. A half a pill will do the job. As long as you don't consistently use high dosages, it's relatively easy to drop when you want to stop. I'm telling you, it's a wonder drug. [img]/images/graemlins/notworthy.gif[/img]

LOISTEN to JON about the xanax...anything that makes you feel THAT good...is very addicting...well because you want to feel good..a duh....problem is you build a tolerance to them and it takes more and more to get the same effct..

I also have a case of post trauma stress disorder. I've almost gotten out of it now, although not thanks to the doctors. I got some pretty useless medication for it, but then I finally found something to take the edge off of it: I started smoking again. It's pretty strange...once I feel the stress, angst, walls closing in, I go out for a smoke and woosh - it's gone. Works wonders. Plain Marboro Lights. [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Been on Wellbutrin once daily and Halcion once at night for probably ten years. Am I addicted to the Halcion? probably. But I have never taken more than I am supposed to, have not had a loss in effectiveness, have had no sexual side effects, and sleep well every nite. I am well balanced, happy machine that sleeps well every nite.

Now if I could stop dipping, cigars, and occasional smoking, things would be great...

I use Xanax when I fly, or when I am extremely stressed out about something and fixate on it.

Small doses of xanax (.25 mg) is good for general stress. I take one of those a few hours before I fly. If the plane is getting tossed around, I'll take another .25.

Mixing Xanax with alchohol makes you VERY sleepy; after a few hours you "crash" and can't keep your eyes open. So if I take two .25s ona plane, I can't have any drinks if I will have to drive or work after I land.

But yes, Xanax is reportedly very addictive, and is used only for circumastantial stress, like flying, or family get-togethers. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]
I have had friends want me to give them a Xanax so they could "get high" - but it doesn't work like that. If you are not stressed, it won't do anything for you unless you start pouring gin on top of it. Then, you'll want to sleep. Kind of pointless as a recreational drug.

I'm currently on Lexapro which is an anti-depressant...only 10mg so it doesn't mess with the PP

I'm also on a relatively new drug called Lamictal, which is for mood swings...and it helps immensely. It takes the "edginess" off. That might make for a good anti-anxiety regimen as well. They wanted to put me on Lithium, but thought there might be too many risks involved with my high BP.
