I'm leaving for work shortly and just walked out onto the porch. The atmosphere has changed quite a bit. You can feel that something is in the Gulf,it is indeed strange.Right down the coastline, all the potential for destuction,it just feels weird.I have relatives in the New Iberia area and they say that the rain has'nt let up in intesity for quite a while.Good luck and I will be thinking of you today at work......................................

                  Re: Hurricane Alert....\'Katrina\' now a cat. 5!!!!!

The news this morning had some somewhat good news for the New Orleans area in that the storm has turned north east slightly, meaning the weaker part of the eyewall (the northeast corner is always the most deadly) is now expected to hit the exact same place Camille hit all those years ago, Mississippi. The storm has weakened in sustained winds (dropping to a extremely strong category 4) but the barametric pressure (the true measure of a storms intensity) remains higher than Camille and Andrew both. While this is somewhat better news for New Orleans I am very afraid that there may not be much left of the city come tomorrow anyways, the way New Orleans is constructed, below sea level with 2 bodies of water on either side is just about the worst possible design for a city about to be hit by a massive hurricane.

The fox news people this morning got yelled at by a meteorologist for implying that the storm was weaking because although the winds are weaker sustained with the pressure being what it is, the gusting winds and damage due to Tornadoes produced from storms this big can be really severe.

I sincerely hope none of you have family in the bullseye areas that chose to ride this out because I don't think they have any real idea just how bad this is going to get. I've been through some 2 and weak 3 hurricanes and I thought those were scary as hell. I can't imagine what a strong 4 or a 5 will be like.

My brother is starting to get hit by some of the outer bands from the storm now, and even though he's in south florida he said there is stuff blowing all over the place and some pretty heavy rain.

                      Re: Hurricane Alert....\'Katrina\' now a cat. 5!!!!!

I'm just east of Pensacola and its not too bad here luckily , some pretty decent wind gusts and some moderate rain, We keep quite a few preovision ready just in case we lose power,
After this is over FEMA will be there primarily in the population centers, generally they are not a whole lot of help. but I did get some financial aid from them last year when Ivan caused some damage to my old farm house, the biggest problem is it takes a long time, and they are really unorganized when it comes to trying to find out the status of your claim. Another big problem they will have to deal with is all the fly by night "contractors" that prey on disaster victims. You have people with the roof ripped off their house and they will do anything to get their place secured, many times these clowns get deposits and partial payments and haul ass, The problem is all the legit guys are swamped and can't begin to deal with all damage.
Actually the true heros in these situation are power linemen who converge on these areas and get power going as soon as possible, I have seen crews from as far as Ohio and Tenessee down here last year, and believe me their help is well appreciated,
I say the boy ain't right!

Ditto. 135 MPH winds will still cause a lot of damage. Stay safe people.

So I was watching this stuff on CNN all night....pretty intense. Hopefully repairs will be possible to new orleans, and the death toll is low. Probably a few are inevitable, but here's to Best wishes.
