• WTF?? Computer/DVD problem

Whenever I now put a DVD into my computer, my mouse cursor completely disappears and my computer freezes up. I have to shut the power off by the surge protector strip and then reboot that way. Any ideas? CDs play fine, and DVDs used to work, but no longer.

I'd say download the latest firmware for the DVD player + the latest driver.

Okay. I guess I'll log on to the Compaq/HP site in a little while and see what they've got. Thanks.

Uninstall and reinstall your DVD software.

Yeah, I (a friend of mine, since I'm sorta computer stupid) wound up uninstalling the whole Windows XP home software and redoing my whole computer back to factory settings! Everything else seemed to work fine but the DVD player all of a sudden. I only got the new computer like not even two months ago. It must have been a software problem somewhere along the line, because everything works fine now. I also had like four different kinds of factory programs to play DVDs or CDs... Windows Media Player, Real Player, Intervideo WinDVD and PC Friendly DVD. Since I did the restore, I've lost my PC Friendly player, which seemed to be my default when I put the first DVD in, but I no longer have it. Everything else has come back and is working great, so I'm happy.

Having both the Intervideo WinDVD and PC Friendly DVD was probably the problem. Glad everything is good now.

Yeah, even the woman I spoke to from Compaq couldn't believe the PC Friendly came with it. She tried to help guide me through everything and it would still freeze up. I noticed it a few weeks ago when I got a free Carvin factory tour DVD in the mail... I put it in and it froze, I thought WTF?, restarted, put the same DVD in and it did it again. I used a couple other DVDs in it after and it was fine. Not sure if the Carvin disc did something to set it off or what. I mostly play CDs on the system and not DVDs, but I happened to try a few DVDs yesterday for the first time in a couple weeks, and it just kept crashing with everything. After the wipe of the system, things work great now, but I won't be using that Carvin disc in the computer from now on just to be on the safe side.

Wow a reinstall thats the hard way to do it. I would unistalled some hardware and re booted the madhine a few times till I solved the problem. I that didn't work I would have done a system restore from the day before you put the Carvin DVD in your system. Hope you didnt loose to much data.

Actually, I did do a system restore first... that didn't help. I uninstalled the hardware and that didn't help either. Maybe I deleted something and it somehow attached itself to something for my DVD player and also deleted it? Not sure, but it's up and running fine now, and I really didn't lose too much data.
