NC governor just announced 2 major pipelines supplying 90% of gas to NC are out of service and to conserve. Gas prices just jumped $0.50/gal here today. Glad I left the pizza delivery business behind a few years ago. There's no way to keep up.

It costs the OPEC nations $4 a barrel for what the sell for now just over $70. Almost a 2000 % markup. Drilling for oil in Alaska looking pretty good right now ?

Try and wait it out as long as possible, the VAST majority of the current price spike is, obviously, the hurricane. Judging by the futures market, the spike will be short-lived- October futures are $.30 lower than current price, November is $.50, December is $.60 lower. Fundamentally, the oil market is pretty solid- it's the technical (ie: emotional) side of the market that is crazy at the moment.

I was thinking the exact same thing Shawn! I had a little 50cc rice-grinder scooter that I kitted up to 70cc into a little spitfire machine! Did 60mph, and got 60 miles to the gallon!

that won't get you through the snow Ken. I need the 4wd. A local gas station was at 3.18 for regular and 3.54 for super this morning. The best price I saw was 2.56 but on the way home it was at 2.79.... Yikes.

No kidding. It is a bit late though. This should have been done 10-15 years ago but there was resistance in the government. Look where we are now.

I have the feeling that if and when North Korea makes it out of the stone age they will be the next global oil guzzler and extra world production will be desperately needed.

Drilling in Alaska? Hello funding to research for alternative fuels? Hydrogen cells? Organic waste being turned into fuel? Solar power? Microwave collectors? Something we don't know about?

Right now, some more hybrids would be a good start, and some mandatory regulations that will make people buy them. Anyone remember leaded gasoline? We replaced that.

What about the farmers that are paid by the government to not grow crops? How about having them grow some corn and make ethanol?

I'm honestly waiting for the day when the thought of refining crude oil to power personal vehicles will be as laughable as steam engine cars and trains are now.

Correct answer noodles, the problem is that all the lobbyists for the oil companies, and the vehicle makers have and will keep this from becoming a reality anytime soon. Retooling to convert to alternate forms of energy would eat up to many of their profits.

Now, with that being said, I drive a '97 GMC K-1500 5.7 liters of pure power every day. I just don't see the wifes '02 Buick Rendevous towing the boat to the lake. Cars, minivans, rice burners just aren't made to tow boats, haul 36 squares of shingles, or 42 bags of Quikrete. These are all things I do with my truck, and just a few of the reasons I need it.

Hummers, they're a fucking joke and a status symbol. Someone said it perfectly earlier. If you can afford to buy the Hummer, you can damn sure afford to pony up for the gas.

Better would be soybeans for bio-diesel. Domestic fuel supply right there, plus farmers would actually be working and making $...win win situation....but we'd need Detroit to come out w/ diesels in everything.
